Tried to call dan, missed office hours by 30 min. I have a sore throat and will be diving on sunday. Sore throat is not related to cold. Have no signs of congestion or sinus dranage. No fever so guess that rules out strep. Not tired so rules out mononucliosis. I plan to go to dr. tomorrow and im sure i will be getting antibiotics. Can i dive with antibiotics. If not can i wait till after dive to start taking them?

Help me out.

PS DAN if you read this extend phone hours some, :)

Of course, you should contact DAN for the best information. As well, it would help if you had the antibiotic name that you are utilizing. But as a general rule, antibiotics do not harm diving abilities. Lack of fever does not rule out strep, and lack of lethargy does not rule out mono...FYI. You're main concern should be your throat, not the medication. If you have an irritable throat, I wouldn't be sucking on a reg at 75+ FSW. Just my $0.02.

Why are you sure you will get antibiotics for a sore throat? Any other symptoms to make you feel it is more than a simple sore throat that should pass in a few days?

I have taken courses of doxycycline and cloxacillin under the advice of a physician while diving and have never heard or read anything to indicate that it would be prohibited to dive while taking antibiotics as long as you do not have an open wound. Assuming the underlying problem itself does not interfere with diving, i.e. breathing issues due to sore throat? Better safe than sorry, at least be extra conservative if you are not 100%

I only use antibiotics on the rare occasions when I have no alternative due to the issue of antibiotic resistance and concern about potential short term damage done to internal flora by antibiotic use.

If you haven't already, a search in Diving Medicine using "antibiotics" keyword will give you something to chew on.
