COZUMEL, 26 June.- From this Friday morning, next to the public boat ramp in front of the military garrison, there is a twelve-ton crane will be used in the construction of new berth for boats children who will be next to the local pier. This machine is to be placed the first pile of the two springs projected, which is an action that is making the General Coordination of Ports and the state government, said Roberto Marin Flores, manager of Coastal Development, before Municipal Port Authority (APIM).
According to the project promoted by the Port Authority of Quintana Roo, the new pier will have an area of 286 thousand square meters in an area of 3000 628 square meters of water, with an investment of 13 million 530 000 pesos to have a last 50 years in terms of anthropogenic natural factors in the area.
The project will have two piers with reinforced concrete structure covered with treated wood, communicated between them, allowing twelve berthing vessels up to 40 feet long and 36 boats up to 30 feet long by mooring system to bollards, and both springs, the farthest will be four meters wide and 77 meters long, while the closest local pier will have six meters wide and 86 meters long.
The period of execution of the work shall be six months from the authorization of the work, with an additional month for awarding it.
Marin Flores said that once built the dock, the boats will no longer be in the road in a disorderly manner, but will be docked at their assigned spots, which will parallel a better image to the destination, according to architectural models, will seek a face to be consistent with the remodeled park "Benito Juarez", combined to provide greater security for tourists embark and disembark at the dock that is intended to start on July 10.

Would any dive shops actually pick up divers at a northern dock? (Except possibly for the rare northern dive sites.)

"North" is relative. I would consider it to be "central" if it's where I gather it will be, which is between the eagles and the ferry pier.

BTW, if you climb onto one of the eagles to have your picture taken, the police will show up in about 10 seconds to tell you to get down. I'm just sayin'. :D

Figure it is 4 miles to the in town piers from caleta and it looks like about another half a mile north of that to this new pier, so maybe some would. It isn't that far if you are already picking up in town.

I didn't mean "pick up" by van or truck, but by boat. Having made the tactical error of staying way north and driving to the Caleta each day, I could only admire those staying south of the caleta who got picked up at a dock near their hotel. Not that the 17min drive was a big deal, but it would have been nice to skip renting the VW bug from Margarita. Staying between wherever the boat is parked and the most common dive sites seems like a good idea, just saying...

I didn't mean by van or truck, I mean a number of OPs drive (Sail? Motor?) their boats from Caleta to the in town piers (Aldora and DP) which is about 4 miles (about 3.5 nautical miles or 1.16 leagues) by boat around the cruise piers and only about .5 miles (.434 nautical miles or .14 leagues) to drive (sail? motor?) to this pier.

I tried to be more 'oceany' this time. I get you though on the commute. Some ops do pick you up in their own vehicles. (They will one day disappear without a trace with a report of a white vehicle with red stripe spotted near where they were last seen.) Some now are paying for the taxi for you.

I saw a bunch of instructors or students or staff or something from one of the ops got their van stopped by the taxis for being unapproved transport the other day.

I see... I didn't realize ops would spend the fuel to sail/motor their boats from Caleta north to a pier then back south to the dive site. That's an extra 4.5 miles x 2 = 9 miles or 72 furlongs or 2880 rods. *First-timer here* ;)

(Okay, fuel isn't an issue for an op that actually SAILS, but I digress...)

The new Pier would be handy for those with accommodations on the north side of town (like Chief) and who might choose a dive op that does pick up in the North, like Aldora—and not just for our Northern and Shark Cave Dives.

PS. We can also pick up there for our afternoon one tank express dives

I get confused enough with kilometers. I'm confused as how it can be 4 miles or 1280 rods to run a boat around the cruise piers and only about .5 miles or 160 rods to drive (by ground vehicle?) to this pier. Can you show maps?

I'd ridden/rode/whatever many a panga from Blue Angel, Papa Hawg, and Hotel Cozumel docks around the pod people barges. Amazingly there are always tourists onboard watching instead of being ashore enjoying the island. I like to moon them if I'm in my shorts. I have to unbuckled the lower strap of my snorkel vest and stand up, putting me more at risk of falling off like the klutz I can be. Got to hope I can recover ok in the water with my shorts down and vest loose. :silly:

Opal's shop did that some before I quit them. Some of the cars were scary. Tres Pelicans uses nice pickups. Pony even took me to the repair shop on east side of town once. Then sometimes they'd use taxi vans. I've wondered about problems.

So how did the taxis stop the renegade vehicle? Whose? I'd be a little worried about Latin tempers.

Furlongs and rods aside, I think CVChief meant 4 miles from Caleta to cruise pier, and another 0.5 miles to the new northern dock. Distance approximately the same by boat, car, or foot.
