new aqualung mask- do i have to do something special?

+1 on the lighter. First time I saw it done I was skeptical and had images of a melted mask skirt in my mind, but it works great
 
For the toothpaste, it doesn't have to be white. It has to be a little gritty and not a completely smooth gel. In fact, some white toothpastes will NOT work for the very same gel reason.

I use a little water, but not too much. A good 2-3 passes should do the trick.

One check I do after each scrub and rinse session is I breathe (haaaa) onto the lens and check for fogging.

Just watched the video. In the future, I will probably try the lighter trick.

It claims the toothpaste is a chemical reaction, but I don't know if I believe that. I just know a little grit and scrub from the paste has worked best for me.
