A lot of people reference "cheap" referring to the cost of the watch. I've found that everyone's idea of cheap is different, so it's completely subjective.

I like sardiverdan's statement about not wearing more than you're willing to lose. That being said, however, I suspect there are minimum requirements.

I purchased an Invicta (not $500 off) and it ran me about $58. I figured if I were willing to go into the hundred range, I could just get a computer.

I didn't get a digital watch with buttons (G-shock) because I had heard that the buttons are not operational underwater... may just be false, but thought it wasn't worth finding out.

I did get one with a bezel so I could mark the time that I dropped. It would have been nice to get one with two bezels to mark the time that I surfaced. In the OW class I found that the time it took to wait for everyone and get back to the dock, I had forgotten the exact time of surface. Maybe not a big deal in "real world diving," I don't know.

I agree that if I'm going to have a dive watch, it makes sense that it looks good enough to wear daily. I had not been wearing a watch since the invention of the mobile phone. :)

I have a nice dive watch, and I sometimes wear it when I dive, but I have never used it to actually time a dive. To time lunch, yes, but why give yourself another thing to think about at the start of a dive? In the pre-computer days I had a bottom-timer, and it was cheap--something like $35 (albeit 1980 dollars), and it turned itself on at the start of a dive. You can still get a bottom timer, but now that it's a piece of tech gear, it costs $200. Once I got a MicroBrain <insert your own joke>, I never looked back. You can get a basic dive computer for $140, and it turns itself on at the start of the dive. Even if there was no other feature that I wanted--ndl calculation, surface interval timing, logging, ascent rate indicator, etc.--I would opt for the computer over the watch because it turns itself on at the start of the dive. You can always slip your dive watch on post-dive, or wear it alongside your computer.

Same here, got a cheap G-Shock watch which i've had for almost 8 years now, and have taken it with me underwater alongside my Dive Computer.

I used one of these for years Amazon.com: Casio Men's AMW320D-9EV Ana-Digi Alarm Chronograph Dive Watch: Casio: Watches Has both analog and digital features, looks good, and for $59 w/ free shipping, it's a good deal!

I now have an inexpensive Timex Reef Gear that I use while diving, a Citizens Eco-Drive Professional Divers for daily use, and a ScubaPro Titanium for when I want to impress.

Out of the two you listed, I would go with the G-Shock. My brother used one for years of diving with no problems.

Fine, I'll tell. I love watches. I mean luuuuuv them. I have a Mares watch that has been great and looks really good. I have 7 G-shocks of varied colors and coolness, 1 Seiko dive watch, 1 Tag dive watch- only for impressing the rest, 1 Momentum that is on a Waterbourne strap that is awesome, 1 1942 Hamilton- Never to touch water!, And several other collector watches from my grandfather, and then I have 4 dive computers.......... I know, I know, but some women collect shoes, I like watches.

Of them all, I wear usually a G-shock or the Momentum diving with my computer on the other wrist. I like a timepiece on when I dive.
I would go for the G-shock, of your choices.

You can't impress chicks at bars with a dive computer or one of them digital dive watches.

If you were to wear a big, honking dive watch (orange or yellow face), chicks are guaranteed to swoon at your feet.

G-shock. Just ask any Navy Diver.
