This thread is what I LOVE about ScubaBoard. I started diving 19 years ago in the US Midwest (Indiana), I met a ton of buddies through ScubaBoard and did A LOT of local diving as a result. Quarries, small lakes, all 5 Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence, road trips to North Carolina and the Florida springs/caverns. All via road trips.

Now that I live in South Florida, my local diving is from Jupiter to Key Largo and Naples. All are within a 3 hour drive of my home.

I am a huge believer in local diving. The vast majority of my 800 logged dives have been by driving there, not flying. Nothing better than exploring locally and getting to know other diving locals.

Best of luck in Germany @heftysmurf! Explore the diving that Germany, Austria and Switzerland have to offer! I have no doubt that you will not be disappointed. Your new buddies may even help you with your german.

I spend quite a bit of time in Northern Germany (grandkids) and being from N Florida, I just bought a Drysuit.

My one suggestion would be to understand what certifications you will need and get those done in SFL before you leave as it will be cheaper and much easier to arrange.

Good luck, Stuttgart is a nice area and Lake Constance is really nice

When I was living in Munich, I was not a diver yet, but I enjoyed visiting the lakes near the city. One of the biggest is StambergerSee and I could see divers there. Of course those are ice melted lakes, so a drysuit is a must.

That's a good call. What certifications might be needed aside from drysuit? I'm SDI Advanced (Wreck, night/lim viz, deep, nitrox)...I can get drysuit while I'm down here at my LDS.

Advanced should be sufficient, at some dive sites Deep is helpful. As already said, diving in Germany is most of the time cold water diving, many spots are dark, and lakes in the south of Germany are ofter deep. No drysuit no fun most of the time.

I have read most Germans like to dive in the lakes of Switzerland.

Which I call bullocks - I have read most English like to dive in Scotland

If you live close to the border, yes, but driving 700km from northern Germany where there are so great lakes? Not so much.
There are plenty who drive +500ml to dive in Scotland.
