ok, sounds good. I didn't know that there would be people on the weekends. thought it was completely dead here in monterey due to the season so i thought i'd be alone every day. I'll do some diving today by myself, then try to find some places with people on the weekend. thanks :)

i wish i could take up scuba, but this is NOT the time in my life financially to be doing such things :)

BTW, anywhere i can park for cheap or free around lover's breakwater, mcabee?

and how am i supposed to wear my hood? the big neoprene lip around it that goes over the shoulders, chest and back... it's supposed to be worn under the wetsuit, right? but it bunches up at the back and it's really hard to zip up my wetsuit.

Hood goes under your wetsuit. If you can't zip up your wetsuit with the hood, you may need a larger wetsuit.

Monterey doesn't have a lot of free parking because of the big tourist industry. The best chance I know of is parking in the El Torito lot by MacAbee. Whether you get charged the $8-10 fee depends on if the attendant is there, and if you're there early in the morning, there may be nobody to collect the money. Last weekend we didn't get charged, I think because it was raining and nobody wanted to be outside.

Re: hood: What fisheater said. Tuck it in to prevent water from getting into the neck. Sometimes it will be hard to zip up, which is another reason to have a buddy there to help. Luckily, you can ask just about any joe on the street to help zip up.

Don't bother posting here for hooking up with divers, they don't respond to you unless you're in their "CLIQUE".

:angrymob:

As proved yet again by their rudeness in not even recognizing your post.

They did the same thing to me several weeks back when I tried to join/get info on a dive "THEY" were doing.

If you want to hook up with local divers here in Monterey email me and I'll get you a list of shore dives, boat dives (Cheap) and our local dive club.

Regards,

:happywave:

Gee, I was pretty sure I acknowledged her post pretty darn soon after she (assuming by the name fuzzy is a she) posted it. Not only was information provided, but knowing how this board is I was also almost certain that if she wished to try scuba she would be more than welcome to join.

If you have had posts in the past get overlooked it isnt that anyone here is trying to shun you or ignore you. I started diving less than a year ago, and to be totally honest (aside from Tours and Classes) I have only dove with 3 people that I have not met on here. (Checked my logbook)

I have been busier than normal recently with moving, work, and a baby on the way but I still get out and dive. As long as my dives are for fun and not work I never have any problem diving with as many people as possible. No matter who they are or how skilled. I also feel that there are many other people on this board with that same attitude. Perhaps your post was just at a bad time? (Early / Late / too far from the weekend) Or possibly during one of our bad condition streaks where no one was really diving anyway. Alas, don't give up and keep poking into threads and im sure you won't have issues in the future.

*sniffle*

okey.... :(

I just got a new wetsuit and fins and i wanted to dive where there was people around so that i wouldn't be so freaked out.. I'm not used to these waters, I'm only here for a couple more days, and I'm living out of my car. I dove today a bit in breakwater by myself after getting my gear and i got so freaked out by the giant kelp, magnified through the mask and stuff. woulda felt a lot better with people diving around me.

i guess i'll just dive by myself the next couple of days.

I don't know if you have seen the breakwater on weekend, but its usually teaming with students, instructors, and divemasters. Plus theres almost always EMTs on site just in case. If you are going to be free diving solo, this is certainly the place to do it on the weekend. Also if you stay slightly to the left of where all the floats are anchored theres a rocky reef area there, with limited kelp this time of year. Generally the whole middle section has rock structures to look at with the thicker kelp more in the center and closer to shore.

Breakwater parking has gone up... its not $10 for an all day pass, and I think something like $1.20 per hour.

The only one of the three that you will find free parking is Lovers Cove. I suggest Lovers #1 which is the site closest to Ocean Ave, and right next to the kayak rentals and snack bar.

i spent all day yesterday diving in lover's cove and even slept on top of one of the small buildings there. it was great as i felt myself getting my diving legs back. my suit kept unzipping though due to the hood skirt bulging under it, and I'm thinking of cutting off part of the back portion of the skirt. and I'm no longer scared of kelp! yay! well, as long as it's light out.

parking in breakwater is now 1.50 per hour, or 25 cents for 10 minutes :(

i'm sitting in the el torito parking lot and it seems that judging from the location of the fee collector box they collect fees on exit? so even if i get here at 5am, i'll still get charged when i exit later?

So tired. I got up at 3:30 am to make the drive to Monterey (and it only took me 2 1/2 hours so I was an hour early). Had two great dives on the Sanctuary and took 114 pictures. Then went up to Stockton for food and poker. Now I'm gonna go to bed and leave taking a look to see if there are any gems in those photos for when I recover from my coma :D
