Just keep well away from the wall as you swim to/from---the fishermen are not friendly. (and the lures I saw on the bottom are pretty gnarly)

Had a great dive at Point Lobos this morning. There was a big swell breaking dramatically over the rocks between Blue Fish and Whaler's but the surge wasn't too bad at our 40 to 52 foot diving depth. Visability was 40 to 50 feet but it was overcast, so a bit dark. (My light setup worked great!) My computer read 47F, Stilldivin's read 52F---same model, go figure. My truck thermometer said the air temp was 44F.

GregSaiz spotted my camera rig and stepped over to introduce himself. I realised later I neglected to actually introduce myself using my real name so it was a very "forum" encounter. (Sorry Greg)

There were whales spouting way out in the bay. Folks were talking of leopard sharks & a lady said she saw porpoises in Whalers, but I didn't see either. Did see a couple of male sheepshead & a host of the usual local critters.

Anyone know how it looked in Monterey or Carmel today? I'm reading the forecast from the NOAA website and it looks promising, if you want to surf. The WAM looks marginal at best. Any chance that the forecasters have it incorrect?

Date: 29 Dec 2012 1100hrs
Dive Site: Granite Pt Wall, Pt Lobos
Gear: Double LP80s, Drysuit, Scooters (2 gavins, 1 Sierra)
Buddies: Dionna, Doc Wong
Surface Temp: 55F
Water Temp: 51F
Vis: 20ft

Lobos was empty today. Rolled in at 0840 to a parking lot with only 4 cars. There was 2 other teams there diving today. The waves were crashing on the point and with the high tide/waves it was sloshing into the parking lot. Plan was to go to Granite Pt Wall and try to find some decent water. We surface scootered out to the worm patch then dropped. Cut across middle reef and over to the east side. Vis wasn't bad but the surge was definitely present as we could see the sand getting kicked up whenever the water action would hit. We snuck a peek around the corner but vis was dropping off there as well. We hung out at the wall and dive buddy Dionna did some fish surveys. Surfaced at wormpatch and surface scooted in. Exit was challenging but uneventful in the end. Had a nice chat with a Jr Diver who was interested in Can lights HID vs LED ect... He was also in a long hose and BP&W which was good to see.

Today, Dec 29th, we rolled into BW to find only 2 other dive teams in the area. We called Pt. Lobos and were told that they were filled to capacity........

3ft vis, Moderate surf entry (chest height). Temp was 55F .

My more inexperienced buddy got toppled taking her fins off in the surf zone and had to crawl out. She got pushed into the rocks by the S entry side but managed to get herself to roll over them instead of into them. It took her a bit longer to exit than I was comfortable ; I was standing by her, calling out the waves and when she should brace. Once wave took her into my foot and my nail got banged up pretty good.

Another team apparently had to swim all the way to the harbor to exit (from the pipe), but I think it might have been more to do with surf comfort than actual conditions. They exited as we were gearing up to get in.

We called the second dive because it was too chilly and conditions weren't stellar.
Didn't rain today though and we escaped with only a partially lifted toe nail.

Dove breakwater for NYE. Conditions were pretty good. Entry was decent and went we dropped down to about 35ft, there was no surge at all. Viz was good out in the side heading toward the metridiums as well, probably 20ft cloudy. Got buzzed by a couple small schools of squid and our lights were attracting a group of small bait fish. We got turned around on our way to the metridiums and ended up at the wall, where a harbor seal hooked up with us and was buzzing us for a little while. At one point, a fish was in our lights and the seal with after it and caught it. All of us had gopros and I think we all caught a bit of him on video. We surfaced 1 minute before midnight so it worked out nicely. Good dive and surprisingly good conditions.

Could see the bottom while swimming out at the "4" mark. Vis was around 10-15' Water temp 50*F. Sunny today and nice in the sun, but little chilly in the shade. Great for putting on a drysuit :) High tide was right around 1230, easy walk from the stairs. No real issue with the surf, easy to get out, easier to get in.

edit: forecast from weather.gov called for 5-6' swells from the west @ 17 seconds.
