A friend and I are heading to Mohave Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8/9. We live in Flagstaff, so we'll be staying in Laughlin. Have never dived Mohave, and would love info even if you can't/don't want to dive with us. :) Tentatively planning 2 shore dives Friday, 3 more on Saturday, but need info on local dive shops for tank refills, water temp, good shore points, and so on. Any and all info is appreciated!

Thanks,

--Dan

You'll want to dive at Cabinsite cove. A submerged school bus, van and a ski boat are objects of interest within easy access of shore.

Local dive shops: I always bring my air from Las Vegas, so I don't know about shops in Laughlin or Bullhead, but I don't think there are any.

Water temps: I've only dived there in warm months, but I can't imagine it'll be any warmer than low 50's at best. You diving dry or wet?

Directions to Cabinsite: Can't really help you there. Both times I've been I followed another car which knew the way. There are dirt roads involved. Check at the ranger station at Katherine Landing.

Here's a good link. It tells how to find the bus, etc. from the shore.

Here's another: Note- Lake Mohave is located in the Lake Mead Rec area, so scroll down to get to the Lake Mohave info.

Have fun and be safe!

Thanks for the info! Bad news on dive shops... hopefully we'll get some happier news, if not we'll be bringing lots o' tanks.

Planning to dive wet; have never used a drysuit, so I'm hoping a 7mm will do us.

Thanks again for the info!

The closest dive shop to Mohave is about 45 minutes away in Kingman. More bad news - it's hit or miss on finding it open. You could always drive up to Boulder City (about 90 minutes north and gets fills there, but that will force you to cut back on your diving. When I used to dive there, I'd bring tanks, dive day 1, head to Vegas for a couple of nights, get fills and dive on my way back. Also, this time of year isn't the greatest for Mohave. Wind picks up between October and May and cuts through that canyon forming small white caps and dropping the visibility. Water temps will be in the low 50s this time of year.

That sounds more like a casino trip with a couple dives thrown in rather than a dive trip.

Actually, it's a show trip. I go to Vegas for the entertainment not the gambling. :D

Thanks all! I got in touch with the dive shop in Kingman, and am making arrangements for tank fills, etc. We'll see how Friday is, and if visibility sucks, etc., it will turn into more of a "gambling and drinking trip with some diving thrown in" kinda thing. :)

Just saw this thread. I've been completely swamped with work. Did you guys hit Cabinsite? How were the conditions?

Water temp was 49-51 according to my computer. Viz was between 30-35ft. Found the school bus, but didnt see much else. The wind started really blowing the second day too.

I'll tell ya what, that school bus is kinda spooky. I wanna try and get over there sometime this summer when the water is a little warmer.

If you take a heading back towards shore but slightly to the right you'll swim right into the van. On good visibility days you can actually see the van from the surface.
