RJP:
This month's "Dive Training" magazine features a cover article about the MOF debate - essentially explaining why it's good "rule" not to put MOF.

I don't suppose they mentioned that the mask around the neck obstructs the bungee backup in the long hose config...

That's why I *NEVER* park my mask down there. If your long hose is clipped off (as it usually is) when entering/exiting water, and your mask is obstructing the backup then you have no easy access to air, which is dangerous IMO... (and particularly after I had the dump valve on my wing stick open I definitely want the backup reg available to me at *all* times when I'm in the water... being able to breathe underwater is the #1 way to interrupt a lot of scuba accident chains...)

And when it comes to losing masks...

No big deal. I've got a backup in my pocket and a third spare in my dive kit. If I manage to lose two masks on a dive requiring two or three masks on a dive requiring one, them I'm thumbing the dive anway... Plus if I lose a mask then I've got an excuse to buy more dive gear...

The only good rationale for this seems to be with OW divers, particularly in OW certification classes, who don't have a backup mask, and if they lose their mask then they wind up calling the dive for the day. Definitely, get those open water students to park it around their neck. Just don't feed them full of bull about how its a sign of panic...

Here we go again...
Yawn, as I've said all along - taking the MOF/NMOF debate seriously is a pretty clear sign that you didn't understand the rescue course!

Darnedest thing is that I thought MOF was an urban legend until a month back, saw someone edging into panic, did the MOF bit.

Of course, the flailing about, overall equipment rejection including both reg and snorkel, is the real sign. If someone is MOF but coherent who gives a rat's patootie.

Hey, sounds like switch hitting to me..........pick and stick with.....

big question is, is there a snorkel attached to MOF????????????:D

No true MOFer would wear a snorkel.

Only MOFers can choose to be MOF or NMOF depending on the situation. NMOFers can only be NMOF.. all the time... because it's what they've been told.

Well said. The true spirit of a MOFer.

Dang! I don't think I've gotten my issue this month. :(

I refuse to be isolated into either camp. I alternate being MOF and NMOF. But........ If there's a pict of a hot girl who is NMOf, I might be persuaded to change. :D

I too consideer myself to be a very open minded person. I study both sides of an issue, consider both the short and long term implications of each side's solutions for society, look deep into my center, soul and moral compass ... and then I pick the side with the hottest women.

I haven't read every post but how come nobody mentioned the fogging of their mask when using the MOF procedure? Is it only me??? Head sweats and mask fogs. Put mask in place to descend (after a while on surface and waiting for buddie to splash) and it is fogged so then spit in mask and rinse with salt water and reinstall. Then wonder why I bought sea gold and so carefully rinsed mask in mask tank on boat???
