Just a basic suggestion....Michigan's upper and lower peninsula as a dive flag....maybe that has already been done....

What about having the red "flag" with the diagonal white stripe as a background, thus leaving the whole 7 letters available for "vanity" purposes.
Of course, the Secretary of State people will want only the left third used, so then just put the flag in and add the motto: Going down in Michigan." >
