But... its cool.... been there.... seen that!

40' waves 1000' crest to crest....
Spindrift blowing everywhere....
The ship hanging out into nothing with each wave....
Crashing down and shivering like it was made of jello....
Grown men crying... women wailing... children...
Ooops... scratch the last line....
It was a lot of fun! :)

Diving is meditation for me. Underwater is the only place my head is totally clear and uncluttered with irrelevance.

UP,

40' waves and howling winds???

Sounds like standard summer conditions in the Drake Passage, that is the one between So. America and Antarctica.

Actually I am exagerating, standard is 25-35 knts wind, seas 20-35' with lots of rogue waves around.
I was on RV Hero, a research ship of 125' and that is a bad size for the seas down there. Too long to ride the waves individually and too short to span more than two.

To me prayer and meditation are the same thing, an attempt to attain a closer connection with divinity. Diving is prayer/meditation.

USGS Oceanographer / 300' - Bering Sea - and yes that was during the summer too.

UP, I had no idea you spent time in the Bering. I've been working in the Bering for the last 6 years.

I pray often, every day. A co-worker once asked me, "What keeps you so up?" I told him, "I pray a lot."
Simple!

It's so cool that there are so many of you out there who make prayer and/or meditation a part of your diving experience. I like Uncle Pug's text (I'm fond of Hebrews 12:1 but you gotta read it in KJV) and 100days-a-year's idea of limiting the selfishness.

I hate to lower the bar here, but PADI has a specialty course for "Zen Scuba".
That, of course, has prompted some commentary, such as "Zen & the Art of Scubadiving" : http://www.zendo.com/~zenscuba/
Check out their c-card: http://www.zendo.com/~zenscuba/membership.html

Other than that, I've seen situations where avowed athiests have dropped to their knees praying. :tease:
but that's another story...

If people are going to start quoting verses and start evangelizing the board I want to hear from the churchlady zeN
