I agree that these are not soley singles divers issues. However, there are other aspects to traveling and diving solo. Some of them were very well explained by Don. Here's another example ( factual actually). I am going in a diving trip next week. Since I am going by myself, I have no idea whom I will "buddy" with. Not a good feeling. Also, the accomodations are based on double occupancy, which means that I will have a roommate whom I have never met before. This may no necessary be a nightmare, but is still a stranger. The alternative is paying extra to have a private room, which confirm Don's point about the added expenses. I understand that solo divers, married or single, may face the same situation, but us members of the Single Club are very likely to face this frequently, specially if most of your friends are non-divers.

I am not for the meat market concept. And I agree with the idea of not allowing personal ads. I see nothing wrong with providing a tool for divers in a similar situation to meet, discuss common issues and find diving buddies and new friends.

I don't understand the opposition. What's the big deal? If you are not interested on the topic move on to the next thread.

Just my 2 psi

I agree that your scenario presents interesting complications....But what I believe the issue was mainly about was folks that aren't married having a forum where they might hook up...

Your situation (not having someone to dive with) is tangential to the first issue. I'm sure a roommate chosen for you on a dive trip would not likely be of the opposite gender...

Essentially you have to request access, then they (NEtdoc or some regulator with lots of power) performs some permission magic, and you are allowed to see that part of the board.

It would keep lurkers down and it would probably cut some fluff out of the system.

So the moderator should go to all kinds of extra work (ripped out of their free time) just so YOU don't have to be bothered with seeing a thread title you may not like???? I may be missing something but if you don't want to see a thread, move along... I can't imagine why you would be offended by this. As for off topic as far as this being a scuba board goes, you are in the NON diving related section... Please explain how a singles thread is any different or less interesting than;

1. What is your pirate name?
2. What was your first car?
3. Any Motorcycle messege boards?
4. Any jets fans here?

Just a few examples of the threads available in the NON diving related section. If you don't like it then move along, it's pretty obvious that a lot of people here do want this section and they shouldn't have to suffer in silence.

It's not...so why do you need a forum on a diving board for it?

It's not (which would seem obvious), however it's also clear that people here like to discuss other subjects and the kind operators of scuba board offer a place for such discussions. I really don't see why anyone would have a problem with it, if you don't want to participate in a non dive related thread then don't let the door hit yer @$$ on the way out ;-)
That's the beauty of this board, divers can get together and chat about all sorts of things. I mean looking for a single diver is far closer to the boards main theme than any of the points I listed in my previous post.
Methinks I detect the sickly-sweet smell of a troll

The problem is not him trolling, it's you missing his obvious point. By your own examples of other threads in this section, you made it for him.

Just start a singles thread. You don't need an entire forum dedicated to it. You could post it right now and be off and running, instead of wasting time arguing about it.

Well Scott, you put it much nicer than I was going to...but yeah, he makes his own point regarding his non-need for a forum.

Although I have no idea where the Board is in making up their minds about a Single Divers Forum, it seems warranted given the reasons. One thread is too hard to search through for different topics. It would be nice to talk about issues such as ways of dealing with singles supplements on liveaboards, being "buddied" up with strangers when on a trip, ways to meet other single divers, etc. without having to wade through one long thread. And if some people don't like it, they don't have to read it... :)

We have discussed this issue, and like the folks who aren't moderators, there is considerable disagreement. Some people have changed their minds after discussion, others haven't. We have decided not to make any changes right away and to postpone further discussion on the topic for a week or two. The ultimate decision might go either way. I will not discuss the details of our discussions, but I will tell you, in general, I feel we already have too many forums (64 - not all visible to everyone), but in such a large group one more can't hurt. I'm pushing for making a singles forum, but if it does happen it is likely to take time. Please be patient.

The solution in the mean time is to go ahead and create the threads you'd make in a singles forum in the non diving forum. If you'll start each title with "SINGLES - (the the real title)" it will be easier to move these threads to a Singles forum should one come about in the future.

Thanks Walter, for the update. We can be patient :D That's a great idea about starting the threads, too!

Perhaps I did miss the point.. I couldn't understand why people had a problem with a singles thread... You all are talking about a forum (ahh light goes on). However, that being stated my pervious points still stand. If there is a demand for such a forum and the moderators and board operators are willing to do it, what's the problem?? Just ignore it and move on. So far I've only seen two people against the idea and no good reasons for it. If people are offered the option of searching for an SO on a scuba related board, how does that negativly impact your life???? What's that?? It dosen't?? Again, don't let the door....

Cheers
