Hello, I'm a big guy 6"0 300lbs and I live up north in canada and we need 14mm to dive in cold water so I need a lot of weight.

I just bought a new Oceanic Excursion. the manufacturer said max 30lbs (5 in each trim pocket and 10 in side pocket)

but I need 36 pound to sink... so my question is... what would happen if I put 13 in eah side pocket?

thank you!

If you jam too much weight in the QR pockets, they might get stuck and you would not be able to ditch the weight in an emergency. Something like the DUI weight harness would hold more, or you could put some in the BC and the rest on a weight belt.

Hi,

I am a Canadian diver with the same dilemma.

I agree with rongoodman - DUI's harness is a nice system.

However, as per fnfalman's suggestion, I use a weight belt.

If you want to stick to the BC w/o a weight belt, max out the pocket weight to 30 lbs. Then, buy some brass clips and nylon webbing to make 2 or 3 lb weights that you can clip on to the D-rings on your BC. This will make a DUI-harness-like system. Plus, you can move the weights about to work out your trim, and if you transition between salt and freshwater and find that your weights are off (you had a big lunch or something) , you can add or remove weight easily while in the water.

Go with the belt. Do you really want that much weight on your BC? Split the weight and lighten your load. You can then handle each piece separately on shore. You'll also be able to better adjust your trim.
