I also recommend booking the Maui Diamond II dive boat to go to Molokini. They are friendly and the boat is not overly packed like some of the other dive boats. Check them out: http://www.divemolokinicrater.com
I dove with the MD2 four years ago, and found their equipment to be sub-standard -- the BCD deflate button didn't like to work. The captain even said afterwards that the BC was just about brand new.

I'd recommend against doing the backwall with them -- they're the boat that "lost" a group of divers back there a few years back.

Anybody that wants to can join me and my son David on our Saturday AM dives. We are both divemasters, and we go where the diving is projected to be the "best" based on weather conditions and our knowledge of the area. I have about 75 local dives and am very familiar with many of the popular dive locations on the west side. My son is a marine science major at UH and he really has the "eye" -- although I'm getting better. He spotted the octopus at Makena last Saturday - but I saw the eagle ray first. David loves to share his detailed knowledge of marine life with anyone who will listen. We'll take any certified divers along - but you don't want to be in a hurry (the octopus is not) - and hopefully you're OK on air consumption. This is not for pay, just fun. PM me if you'd like to come along.

Mark,

Is this a regular every-Saturday event, or just this coming Saturday?

This is a regular thing. We go to the SB get-togethers too. David is here until late August, but I still dive every weekend when he's gone. I enjoy doing escorted dives and get the benefit of having a buddy when David's gone. I'm starting to take a day at Molokini or Lanai once a month. BTW - here's a link to some pix Dave took at Makena last Saturday:

Nice photos!

I'd love to go diving with you when I get back to Maui... I'm hoping by the beginning of August, but we'll see when the house here sells.

I'm planning on starting the DM course as soon as I get there -- not sure what site I want to map yet... maybe Makena.
