My first post, please go easy on me....

Excuse me if I am re-visiting an old issue for you here, but I really could do with some guidance (ideally from someone with medical qualifications) to prevent a minor mask squeeze incident turning into a major drama where I work - in the Sahara desert.

I have just come back to work straight from a diving holiday in the Indian Ocean. It was excellent, apart from the fact that I discovered mask squeeze (breathe out through the nose, breathe out through the nose...). I have no pain, but my eyes had absolutely no whites in them 10 days ago, and now are improved, but still heavily bloodshot.

From what I can make out, there really is no treatment for mask squeeze - it just takes time to go back to normal. However, the camp Doctor here has no experience of diving conditions (they are not common here) and wants to get me a medevac out of here, to see a specialist ophthalmologist.

I am an engineer and don't want to tell a Doctor how to do his job, but I would like to reassure him that I don't need to be flown out of here to see an eye specialist in northern North Africa (who probably doesn't see any diving conditions either). I have negotiated a 3-day delay, and have to return to the doc Monday 01 November. In the meantime, he wants me to get anti-inflammatory ointment ('Maxidrol') into my eyes, as well as eye drops.

Can anyone out there help me to reassure the local Doctor that it is safe for me to remain here?

If this is not of general interest, I'd be happy if anyone wanted to contact me direct - I don't know if it is correct etiquette to post my email address here, so we'll deal with that if we need to.

Many thanks.

Have your local doctor call DAN directly. This is probably the only way he will get first hand reasurrance. I suggest to all of my students who need medical evaluations that if their doctors have any questions have them call DAN. Several have and have told me they were pleased with the help they offered. PM me if you need the # (if you are diving you should always carry the DAN #)

DAN should be able to sort this out for your non-diving/non-opthamologist camp physician. You or he can pose questions by calling (919) 684-2948 (Mon-Fri, 9am to 5pm EST) or by emailing http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/c...asp?RE=Medicine.

Best of luck.

PS: You are free to post your email address if you wish. Also, since you have registered with the board responders may PM you thru that facility.

Many thanks both of you - I'll take it form there. I don't think the camp doc would have the confidence in English language to call a specialist in the US, but I've got the number & the website, so I'll sort it out.

Quite a service you people provide!
