"The first law of self defense is those that run away live to run away" - I used to lose a few after that but then I was not interested in teaching thugs.
We call that the "Nike defense". Very effective for living to fight another day...

Part of the reason for this gift is that my family isn't really all that happy about my climbing and diving...

So they want to encourage me to go do martial arts... Go figure.

It is something that has been in the back of my mind for a while. Cost is going to be a concern to at least some extent, if I take it beyond three months I'll be paying for it myself. I expect I'll enjoy it.

What should I be looking at in terms of cost? Membership? Per lesson? Too cheap? Too expensive?

Feel free to PM me with your experiences...

Thanks for the input!

Matt

It should be a lot cheaper than your other hobbies - but then I started diving because I had to give up Jitsu due to a bad back (my own fault for not warming up properly)

...but I pay $95 per month with a six month contract that I can just keep renewing or stop at any time. I can take anywhere from zero to 20 classes (approx) during that month, but I average 3 per week (averages out to about $8 per class).

IMHO, while somewhat more expensive than a normal gym, it is a LOT more fun. I had lost interest in the gym for about a year when I stumbled onto martial arts and I haven't looked back since. A great workout with cool people and much more entertaining than a stairmaster or free weights.

well I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a big fan of Tae Kwon Do, it might be my black belt, or it might be that it was a lot of fun. My classes (which will be different from instructor to instructor) was more about how to fight and defend your self than the whole martial arts mentality you see in kung fu movies. I still learned discipline, but nobody ever called me grasshopper.

I don't remember costs, but it was 3 month 'chunks'. The nice thing about that is there were a number of classes you could take, and I was training 3 days a week for a while [once I got in shape enough that I was able to walk from the bus stop to the dojo two days after a class!]. But it's been over 10 years now since I last formally trained.

So your parents aren't happy about the risks in diving and climbing? Is that it? One of these days buy me a couple beers and I'll tell you the stories that made my parents completely cringe.... The 3 times I went straight from fund-raisers to the hospital for x-rays of both hands since they were bruised and swelled up like ballons [my father, who's health insurance I had at the time didn't much like the fund raisers where folks pledge based on a 'per board broken']... Another good one was the time I woke up with a lump on the back of my head, and my foam nunchaku lying next to me. I got a lot more careful about that 'behind the neck' move. There of course was the broken windows when I shot the foam off those 'chucks... [the little plastic peice on the end _can_ break a window]

oh.... I'm all itchy now... I might have to dig out 'dem foam chucks... It's about ready for bed so maybe I'll try that behind the head move again! :)

I train with a guy who has 12 years of TKD experience and is an MP in the Marines. His kicks are absolutely lethal...even with a kick shield he can still put huge bruises on my thigh. However, for my money, straight striking stuff...I would go Muay Thai.

I'm going to try that budokan place. It sounds like a pretty small operation (he said they add about 7 new people/year).

They pretty much said to come by and train with them for a couple of weeks to see how I liked it, and then to discuss cost if I wanted to commit to it.

I think I'll give it a try tomorrow night and see how it goes...

Thanks for the help!

Let me know how it goes...I am always interested in other arts.

Unless you are "fighting with" or "defending yourself against"
someone willing to stand up and punch/kick the crap out each
other ....

You WILL end up on the ground where it frequently
becomes a grappling/wrestling match.

Can you say "Brazilian Jui-Jitsu"?

Personally, I believe nothing takes the fight out of someone
like one well placed shot with a .45ACP.
