Maybe they'll even make some improvements to that road that leads down to the cobble stone beach of death.

Something nice and close the water's edge. :crafty:

Christian

Maybe they'll put in a nice boat lanch, so we won't have to drag the kayaks over the cobbles.

Despite rumors of doom and gloom, the Old Marineland parking lot and pool were wide open this morning at 0830....great diving...several divers bubbling about happily. Viz = 25 feet. Lake Pacific. Maybe....the construction will be weekdays and the lot may be open on Sundays? I'm just guessing, here. Wish someone could get a cam on the gate so we could check before doing the drive. Telephone trees, anyone??? Lots to see and do if it is closed, though. Malaga is 11 minutes away, Abalone cove ($ to park :-( is just around the corner. White's point is interesting.
Just check the tide before driving over. Other than Marineland, most PV rocky-entry sites are most unpleasant at low tide. Hey...it can be done, but it ain't much fun. Shin dents, anyone???

Not much of a geotech guy but have only consumed company resources on a few extended construction projects...got the impression from the last crazy finish or die overtime job that Sundays are probably really tough for developers. Most construction workers belong to the union, and their hourly rate reaches the breaking point on Sunday. So maybe we can sneak in there while everyone is away. Maybe we can come to an agreement with the developer to allow us access during downtime. Does anyone know which developer is running the show? I would be happy to inquire for everyone.

I received a return call from the California Costal Commission office today. Here is the short of what they said.
1. Construction has NOT yet started. A movie shoot has and the rent-a-cops work for them not the property owners or the construction company..
2. The Costal Commission has NOT agreed that they can deny access during construction.
3. They do recognize that during the grading and construction of the road or trail down to the water, there may in fact be a short period of time when access will be by alternate route or even potentially curtailed for as short a time as possible.
4. They received a denial of access phone call from one other person who was a local and not a diver.
5. The Costal Commission is “investigating” this matter and will be keeping a close eye on divers access during the construction process.

Cool, so it looks like a great dive site for this Sunday. :),

Thanks Melvin

Thank you, Melvin, for the research and report...mostly good news if used appropriately.
Did you contact the CCC via Steve Hudson's number (805-585-1800)? Or is there a better number for divers to use to clarify closure rules as this construction proceeds?

I printed your post and will have it in my car whenever I dive Old Marineland in case the movie-set security force needs enlightenment. And the CCC enforcement number is in my cell phone list.
I'm really glad to hear that the CCC enforcement office is watching and responding.
Thanks,
Claudette

Apparantly it is the Disney Production crew filming Pirates of the Carribean parts 2 and 3 that has caused the latest closure problem. Gina at the Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall is the one who issues filming permits and was to have spoken to them about it. Access is supposed to be open now. If there are any problems call (310) 544-5205. This is the Office of the City Manager.

Let's hear it for the Calif. Coastal Commission... as long as you're not a Malibu beachfront property owner. Glad this is resolved for those of you who dive the (shudder, gasp) "big island" across the Channel (= mainland).

I love it, Dr. Bill. "Hey, I'm not just LA beach diving...I'm Big Island Diving!!" Adds a whole extra layer of glamor...beneath the sand and tar....
Good one!

Yep, I always call that big block of rock over there the "Big Island" when I'm talking to divers here on Catalina.

Dr. Bill to lovelies in neoprene "Hi, where are you pretty ladies from?"

Lovelies to Dr. Bill "None of yer darned business" er, I mean "I'm Donna from Redondo Beach and my phone number is 310-510-5555." "I'm Mary from Huntington Beach and my e-mail address is lovely_mary@comcast.com." "And I'm Laura from Beverly Hills. You can reach me through Fox Studios."

Dr. Bill back to lovelies "Oh, you're all from the 'Big Island' across the Channel!"

Lovelies look at Dr. Bill with bewildered look. Of course they are all SoCal blondes! Just joking ladies.
