After 6 years with MARES ABYSS MR22 I can only say that I am very impressed. My last one hasn't been serviced and has done at least 2000 dives, I clean in water and spray with Silicone spray once a week! Reason for no service is that I have no time due to work and when I do have time I keep forgeting!
Should last you a life time!

Regs can go a long time without service and many dives. And while external maintenance is great, I don't know that I would go more than a coule years without service. Each to his own I suppose.

If you do a search you will find that some people feel that Mares regs have a stiff hose to the second stage. This may cause some users jaw fatigue but is easily fixed by swapping with a more flexible hose.

I took apart my Abyss Y-day shortly after posting the previous pos and cleaned everything and there was loads of sand, gritt, rust oxidations you name it and it was inside of the Abyss! After one hour in 60% vinegar the parts looked like new! I changed all except for the Diaphram that I didn't have! I also did the 2nd stage and my Dacor Viper that I use as my Alternate Airsource!
I didn't have a guage for the middle pressure so I marked the settings before I took it apart and guess what, when everything was put back together I turned the Tank on and my old Abyss worked like a new one! I did a test dive with it in the afternoon! Like a new reg. Buy one! You wont be dispointed!

While I have no doubt the Abyss is a very reliable reg, I'm not sure that I'd allow something that my life was so dependent on to go that long without at least a check-up.

Ahhh....Mr. Mares, looks like they brought it back by popular demand! I pitched a fit with the Mares rep early last year because I couldn't get a second Abyss second stage from my LDS. I went online and got 2 from LeisurePro, one for me and one for my buddy. Granted my buddy didn't want yellow (I didn't care) and he ordered a replacement black plate from the LDS. The Mares rep and my LDS knew full well I was going online and they said there was nothing they could do about it since Mares stopped making them and had also stopped selling them "loose" so to speak.

BTW, I have two complete sets of Abyss regs. I believe the secondary should be the same high quality as the primary. God knows, when I donate my primary, I WANT the same for myself.

There seems to be some confusion. Mares have apparently withdrawn the Abyss from sale in the US, but they have just made the octo avalible in Europe this year :11:

Who knows, as i've said before MARES need to get a grip on customer relations

The yelllow Abyss octo was released on the market when they changed the appearance in 2000. I remember it was an option when I bought mine in Germany.
Mares is offering different lines of equipment in differnt countries. They are offering suits and BC's(I think) in North America that you'll not be able to get in Europe and on the other hand, I wasn't to find the exact same boots from Germany in Canada(In the LDS, they told me, they have never seen such boots). I remember you couldn't get their tanks in Germany either. I am wondering about their marketing too.
