do you all have any tricks to keep cool ?
Yes.

One would be to take cold water with you to the dive site and pour it over your head and the outside of your suit before taking the hike.

On dives where I need to be suited up but know I will be waiting for others I will get in the water with just my suit on before gearing up. That way evaporative cooling will keep me from over heating. In your case that would have meant twice the amount of hiking and that is why I suggested taking along water to pour over yourself.

GUE teaches a great system, but for whatever reason several of their hand signals seem to be different from what is taught to open water divers. It's important to go over signals with buddies so everyone's on the same page... especially with new buddies.

I learned the closed fist hold command in DIR-F, but when non DIR divers use that signal, it might very well be a "danger" informative signal, not a "hold" command signal. Hold can also be communicated with an open palm facing someone, like a traffic cop. You really can't assume everyone has a common understanding.

about calling the dive: never feel any pressure to call a dive, i have on several occasions. some because gear didn't fit right, and others because of different reasons.
about hand signals: i always go over signals before a dive if diving with a new person, otherwise if something happens how can you expect to help if you cant communicate

You should, so sad..........can't even get over the rocks, you wimp.

PS. Just kidding, always a good thing to consult the tide tables as part of your dive plan, that's if there was one.

MASS-Diver:
In the US armed forces Hold is signaled with a closed fist

That's great, and it makes sense, but it doesn't alleviate the problem... namely that some divers aren't trained to recognise it as a hold signal, and that those who are may not be accustomed to what some others use.

Agreed, as has been repeated throughout this thread - it's always a very good idea to go over signals before you dive with someone new.

WEAKLING!!! just kidding.. if i fell once i would have claimed head injury and gone back. I'm not very strong and i have a hard time with my gear on shore dives, so once i start falling im out lol. I would have been like "Peace! I'm out. See ya tomora!"

I think you made the right call. In that case, I would have felt the EXACT same way. Don't be hard on yourself. One must know their limits.

Man I feel like a 100% wimp.
I was going to do a 2 tank dive on Sunday.
the dive program I went with was going to dive back beach but the DM said there was not parking
and folly cover looked packed @ 3pm (we were going to do 2 late dives)
so the DM picked this spot between folly cove and Back beach ....
you walk down this little path and you are on some big rocks.

sooooooooo it was like 90" out I got all my stuff one and started the 45 yard hike down to the water .... the tide was out so the rocks were
100% covered with sea weed.
I fell 3x hard not a little stumble but a total feet in the air kind of fall .... I was so hot and so pissed that I called off the dive and went home.....

the entire day I felt like a wimp for not pushing my self ...... the main problem was I was sooooooooo hot ...
do you all have any tricks to keep cool ?

Scuba Gabe

Definately the correct call!

Don't feel like a wimp!

Basically, if you don't feel like diving; then don't! If you are not comfortable, happy or just not in the mood, then why dive?

By diving when you are not 100% comfortable; for any reason, you put yourself and those around you in danger!

Diving is meant to be fun!
