Hi guys,

I am going to Malta in late January for a conference and I think I can steal one or two days for some scuba diving. I tried to look up some recommendations but got pulled into a Malta vs Gozo dimension that left me thoroughly confused! If any of you have any recommendations of ONE place I can go to get in a bunch of great dives without wasting time traipsing around the islands, it would be much appreciated. Wrecks (the place is known for them, I saw) and fauna are my thing much more than flora. As for my certs, I am a Rescue Diver with Deep, Nitrox, and Wreck specialties, approximately 90 dives beneath my belt. I just finished the Wrecks course in July, and have not used it yet, so I am hesitant to trumpet that just yet (but would be fine if not leading). Thanks

DiveShack is a good operation, comfortable if staying in the Sliema area. If staying up north, as a local I would recommend Scubatech in St. Paul's Bay as they may be able to arrange both Malta and Gozo dives comfortably.

Most of the diving here is shore-based, and by boat for deep technical wrecks, some of the off the beaten track diving sites and Comino dives. Boat diving in January will be limited due to it being "low" season. Some centres still may offer it as an option if they have a group, but they would rarely do individual dives via boat unless you're ready to cough up a good amount for the extra expense.

www.maltadives.com for a list of all sites, www.divinginfo.mt for non-commercial info and news from the locals.

Btw. the ferry from Malta to Gozo takes about 30 min each way and allow a bit more for travelling on the islands... your call if you'd wish to use a divecentre in Malta for Maltese dives and and a Gozitan one for Gozo - in the latter case, I'd recommend Atlantis or St. Andrews diving centers
