I am heading to Cocoview in 12 days. Is Malaria meds really necessary?

I have lived in South east Asia (Malaria Zone) and never took any. Here is the thing, there are two school of thoughts:

Taking the Malaria meds will not guaranty you not getting it. It may help prevent it, it may not. But if you get it, it is much more difficult to cure. If you didn't take the tablets, you might be in a better position toward recovery... this is because the medication you start taking before your trip is the same medication given if you get the desease, which means that your body will be more resistant to the med. should you contract the disease.
The best way to avoid Malaria is still to wear protective clothing such as pants, shirts with long sleeves etc... and to wear insect repellent with Deet.

Of course I am not a doctor, and thus this should not be taken as a medical advise, I am only talking about my personal experiences.

A visit to Roatan carries the risk of getting malaria. The Center for Disease Control recommends taking antimalarial medication if traveling in Honduras, including Roatan. The CDC also says malaria can be contracted despite all precautions. See here and decide for yourself.
