Here in California I always wear my gloves, (cold water), bring a knife and EMT shears, and have used them to free myself of entanglements. But there is no reason at all to bring a knife or shears while diving in COZ. Heck it actually feels great to dive with less gear.

You are right. Beside the fact that they are against the rules there is absolutely no reason to wear a knife unless you just want to look utterly foolish to the rest of the divers and the crew on your boat. There is no danger of entanglements with fishing line.
