My OW instructor told us that cave divers use the rule of 3rds.

My OW instructor told us to always use the rule of thirds. Mabe he was being conservitive but works for me

I've kept quiet in this thread for 9 pages but I feel the need to make a comment.

I dive the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. I got DAN insurance today. The rigs we dive are in 35' to 400' of water.

My first dive after my OW cert weekend, which was the next weekend. I told my uncle that I didn't want to go past 60'. I kept asking him how deep were we going and he wouldn't tell me. He told me just to follow him. We went to 110'.

Let me get this straight: you're diving in 400' deep water without a depth gauge.

Your uncle, being a police diver, should know better than to lead a new diver on a "trust me" dive to 110'. He is being reckless and irresponsible with your safety.

No, I am going to ask him to stay at about 70' or less. One time he told me to stay at 100' and he went down to 160'. He told me if I got low on air to just go up on my own, and if he saw me start going up he would come up too.

If you dive with him, you're going to die.

If he's at 160 and you're at 60, you're diving alone, since if he ascends rapidly enough to help you, he'll die.

Thats not really true. Die slowly, and painfully is more accurate.
