I use to live in key largo and I use to work for a few different dive shops down there. I would only recommend rainbow reef if your very budget conscious and don't mind diving on a true cattle boat. I would recommend Horizon Divers, they have a great operation and a much more experienced crew. There's other reasons I would recommend horizon but like I said I use to live down there and still visit from time to time so I don't want to cause too many bad feelings. Btw this is only my recommendation if your just doing recreational diving. If your into tech diving, I would recommend silent world then horizon divers.

cidcolada, it's so competitive in the upper Keys area that any dive op that was truly poor or unsafe could not survive long. The trips reports where someone relates a bad experience are rare, and from the ones I've read I have to conclude that it can happen with almost any dive op there. That said, there are some dive ops that seem to get mentioned repeatedly on SB. So I doubt you would go wrong choosing any of those. If smaller boats and guides in the water appeal to you, then by all means go with a dive op that offers those.

When we were in the Keys last July, we used HMS Minnow Charters. Capt. John is a really nice guy and he only takes a maximum of six divers on his boat. He's moored right at the Holiday Inn. is his website. We'll definitely dive with him again. The only bad thing was the weather was VERY uncoorperative (not the captain's fault!) so we didn't get all of our dives in that we wanted. Capt. John is very easy to work with via email and phone to set up whatever diving you want. The other dive shop we'll use again is Conch Republic Divers in Tavernier. They are a great dive shop, have wonderful staff, and you now can sign up for their daily dive reports to be sent right to your email! I live vicariously through those reports!!!

To echo the above sentiments most are excellent with a few just very good. Otherwise, they simply wouldn't be here.

To better suit your requirements visit floridakeys.com and click on diving and snorkeling. Then go to TripAdvisor to sort them out. Best wishes.

All of the above posts have been very helpful. I think that I'm just not going to worry about it too much and will just go with the boats that are going where we want to dive.

Again, thanks for the input.
