.... and here is all you need to know about Dumaguete: dumagueteinfo.com

Anyway, Visa-extensions are easy but not that cheap, Internet in Duma 3 providers 1000 peso a month for a ok connection, Diving fantastic (Apo, Moalboal, Balicasag, Ducomi, Dauin, Siquijor) all just a short trip away,
Duma has sea and airport, so easy to get there and to leace if needed.

Shugar, if you are in Duma this weekend, drop me a line, I don't have a red carpet, but know a place with 25 different sorts of ice-cold beer (5 different german wheat-beer)

cheers

Rhoody

If they have Erdinger...I'll be like a pig in mud.:D

If you're only planning on doing this for a year or so, move around a bit. A year isn't long enough to really become "part of the community" so to speak so keep it more like vacation and exploring. See more of it. I lived in the Philippines for 11 years and didn't see 5% of what the country has to offer. It's big and it's beautiful. I'd spend some time in the deep south (Gen Santos and Davao), the Pacific side, which I never really saw. It has great surf too. Up north of Subic the beaches are nice and there's surf in the S China Sea believe it or not. ( Dont' worry, there's great diving too ) The resort areas are going to be more expensive. If you can take the culture shock, live out in the fishing villages and ask the local fishermen where they catch fish. They'll take you out on the boat and drop you on their reefs. That's how I'd do it.....

I could easily spend a year just diving around the Visayas. Spend a few months in each place. Get to know it in depth.... yeah, I like that idea :)

This is good info...maybe I should blow off moving to California and go to Dumaguete.

Y'all need good accountants right???
california vs. dumaguete? NO CONTEST!

both places have tons of filipinos anyway...

so it'll come down to the diving...

cold kelp or warm water reefs?

I loved the diving in Duma...been wanting to go back badly!!

You're right about CA, there are filipinos everywhere. I even got stood up by one a few weeks ago outside San Francisco. (Love you Ben Ben :lotsalove:)

Gotta have a job though...

Ditch the boyfriend, buy new dive gear, dive your ass off, marry a rich Pinoy, live where you want. There ya have it.

hey greatwolf, i'm just wondering, are you the same greatwolf from the Fil-Aussie forum....i noticed you are from sydney

cheers...

Dumaguete - is nice, but I would be careful with your expectations. It is not THAT great! There is a limited number of good restaurants and bars. There is only a couple of places with any form of decent nightlife...some nice live bands though.

Just playing devil's advocate really as Dumaguete was starting to sound pretty awesome. It is very far from being a real city, there's a lot of stuff you can't get, and rent can be high depending on what you are after.

So it all depends on what you are used to and what you want. For a years trip you might be better with someone elses idea of using it to move around to the many great places all over the PI.

I have a nice house on the beach at a good price, lots of good friends, and enough social scene to keep me busy( i have a 10 month old!). So I am happy. And of course there is plenty of access to great diving.

Let me know if you have any questions.
