Dumaguete - is nice, but I would be careful with your expectations. It is not THAT great! There is a limited number of good restaurants and bars. There is only a couple of places with any form of decent nightlife...some nice live bands though.

Just playing devil's advocate really as Dumaguete was starting to sound pretty awesome. It is very far from being a real city, there's a lot of stuff you can't get, and rent can be high depending on what you are after.

So it all depends on what you are used to and what you want. For a years trip you might be better with someone elses idea of using it to move around to the many great places all over the PI.

I have a nice house on the beach at a good price, lots of good friends, and enough social scene to keep me busy( i have a 10 month old!). So I am happy. And of course there is plenty of access to great diving.

Let me know if you have any questions.
boston market near siliman... yum!

want to live in the city? your best choices would be... Sta.Mesa (near to almost anywhere in Metro Manila)...Cubao (the heart of Quezon City)... or Cainta (very near Ortigas Business Center).

Anilao is just a 2 to 3-hour drive away.

Ditch the boyfriend, buy new dive gear, dive your ass off, marry a rich Pinoy, live where you want. There ya have it.

Can anyone recommend a rich pinoy?? :D

Never hurts to ask...

:rofl3:

BUT if I married someone, I'd have to give up my one true love...Phil Collins...er...I mean Mike Veitch!! :D

Based on your criteria, I wouldn't pick PG. There is no ATM there.

I thought Atlantis had an ATM now? At least on Sabang beach...

Dunno if it is still there but it certainly was before.... I even see Mr Pope grinning away!

The last time i was in PG (March 8-16,2008) ...the atm in atlantis is no longer there...the crew said there was no enough customer to keep it going..

cheers..

Coya Caloy is rich!...but he's taken.:)

Lolo Pao! he's available!!!:D (i think).....unless, he married his rooster.:D:D

thanks again... this is great, i'm impressed with how much discussion this thread has generated.

while i love the idea of traveling around for a year it's not really practical for us. we will both be freelancing in order to make the money we need to live (we both work in the internet industry so can work from overseas). however in order for that to work we need an internet connection. we'd like to find a place to rent and stay for a while so that we are can have internet at home and not have to spend all our time in internet cafes.

we're really not looking for a big city at all... in fact, i'm worried dumaguete might be too big. we're leaning more to somewhere like dauin, that we can still have access to the amenities of dumaguete, but not have to live in the city. this is also why panglao is looking good, the city is close enough that we have the benefits of it, but don't have to live there.

as for working while we're there, anything we did we would do the legal way for sure, but we really have no plans to work over there as we will have the income from our freelance jobs. while it would we nice to get some DM work in, i would be just as happy to dive for free in exchange for helping out around the shop, or leading the occasional dive group, but i by no means want to be work full time.

cheers, GP
