I dove Halfway Rock three times this week/weekend. On two dives I spotted the same lobster missing both claws. --Matt

Just learned something new the other day, a lobster missing both claws is called a "pistol".

Ron Frank:
Maine Lobsters

Halfway Rock is in Massachusetts so this is actually a Mass. Lobster.

I have seen quite a few of these unfortunate souls and always pass them by, I don't have the heart to grab something that can't fight back (guess I would have to be a a photographer if I live in the South). I (knock on wood) have never pulled off a claw and hope I never do. I figure if I can't grab them by the body there is always next time. I have also never been pinched good by a claw of course that is just luck and the fact that they scare the heck out of me. I know that fear goes away the first time you get the business end of a claw and realize you will survive but hopefully I never find out.

I have found that instinct takes over and the urge to yank the hand away prevails. That would certainly remove a claw.

I got pinched during my last dive and jerked my hand away out of instinct and the lobster did not lose his claw. It was probably a borderline keeper size. I guess it just depends.

I don't know where you heard that, but we refer to doubled culled bugs "Bullets" it's a pretty widely used term - if fact when I lobsters (seasonal commerical license) the fish mart has a price for culls and a price for bullets.

I heard the term from a friend but I looked it up on line. Alright are we gonna have to have another discussion take off like the ole underwater sign language thread. About all I know about lobsters is that if I catch them they either have eggs, are too small or have a mark on their tale that may or may not be a V notch but qualifies for look don't touch. I think if I did the math I spend about $200 dollars a pond for the keepers I am able to actually eat. I defer to the local NELD experts on this subject.

I just don't understand why it would be called a pistol? It seems obvious why it's called it's a bullet. I just don't want any of you guys embarrassing yourselves :)
