I’m new to this lobster hunting thing, but I’m game.

My question is this, what do I do with my critter bag as I’m hunting for them? Do I hold it in my hand and go along? Do I attach it to my BC? If attached, with a retractor?

Any help to help me impress the CEO will be appreciated.

Oh, and this is for New England lobsters.

I usually have mine clipped off to a D-ring, and I wouldn't use a retractor. Of course, I don't like to use retractors for anything, so do whatever you're comfortable with.

I would say the real question is what kind of bag to get? I have not been successful in getting bugs during the season yet. I bought this big bag but the damn thing causes way too much drag in the water then I bought a completely mesh bag but still have not got onto the bugs. I guess when I am hunting I am looking for fish to shoot and not antennas poking out

I like this one. I roll the bottom up and stuff it into the top of the bag until I need to use it. It opens with one hand, which is important when the other one's got lobzilla in it. I use a double bolt snap clipped to my lower BDC D-ring. Sure it will cause drag in the water, but you're bug-hunting, not swimming laps.

BTW, nice fish in your Avatar Ironhead. How many lbs was that sucker?

I agree about not swimming much, the first time I used that bag we hit a decent amount of current and that type of bag actually caused me to basically blow the dive as the bag even tucked in filled up with water enough to cause the current to rip me from the ground and start to carry me away. I dove the same spot without the bag and had no problems and shot the grouper in my avatar. that bag actually caused me to not shoot his brother same size in the same spot. I shot one of the 2 huge ones that were holed up. the mesh bags might suck getting lobs in and out but they wont cause the drag a big nylon bag will.

I don't understand how the bag could "fill up" with water when the bottom is mesh??? I don't even notice I'm wearing it (unless one of my captives decides to grab a little bag, crushed neoprene, and thigh).

you are right the end is mesh but I folded the bag into itself and closed it shut making it small as possible till it was time to use it. once I did that then the mesh was no longer at the end. now possibly if the bag was left open it wouldnt catch the water but would be very big. I never dove with it open to see. I think the bag you have shown in the picture is slightly smaller. I just had bad luck each time I brought it along.

I use a large bag that's totally mesh with a circular folding metal opening. Before I have anything in it, I give it a half-twist and close the end of the bag in the mouth of the bag. That keeps it small until I need it.
