Good advice, thanks. I've accepted this isn't the one.

I've also had a thought that I was trying on the M size with a fleece undergarment, which made the whole suit very tight, but probably should've tried it with just a base layer. I understand neoprene is warmer so may not need a thicker undergarment for 50-52 water? Should it fit snugly, like a wetsuit, or should there be some room?
How long are your Monterey dives? Do you plan to dive Monastery and go deep? If so, you'll need a neoprene suit + base + mid layers.

If you want to properly try on suit, get:

- A base layer (merino 150 will do)
- A warm layer, like Fourth Element Arctic
- Proper dry suit socks + thin socks
- An tank with air with a dry suit hose

Put everything on. Attach the dry suit hose and pump in a bit of air. How does it fit? If you feel comfortably snug, you should be ok.

For reference, once you drop below 100' in Monastery, you won't stay warm for a long time if you are wearing a crushed neoprene suit with only a base layer. If you're diving Cali, get a suit that is comfortable with thick underwear. That's what you'll use in Monterey. When diving SoCal, use the same pants but opt for a slightly thinner top and ditch the hood.

I presume you are on open circuit, so you body temperature will affect your gas consumption. That's why I'd err on a warmer side. In years of diving the area, I don't recall being too warm in a neoprene suit with a base layer + Bare mid layer.

Good to know, so I definitely wouldn't have fit into the M size with a base and warm layer on, so that one's out.

I recently tried on a Waterproof D7 Cordura size ML, which is supposed to fit my exact proportions, but it also felt like it was designed for a taller, wider person. Does this look like a decent fit? I'm wearing it with basically street clothes underneath.

It looks like the suit has more room in sleeves, torso, and legs. However, I like my suits tight and may be biased.

If you need a good first suit, why don't you do Seaskin? It is an extremely good suit for the money and is made to measure. It'll be on a roomier side, but for Monterey Bay it will be perfect if you run a decent base layer and a mid-layer.

This is ultimately the plan, I'm just looking for something to use until the order arrives. My time in Monterey is limited so I wanted to get diving asap.

You'll still want a decent undergarment in addition to the base layer. I used an Scubapro Exodry (same as the everdry, but with rubber boots) and the same conditions and still used some decent undergarments (4th element xerotherm IIRC). And I'm usually ok with the cold (I'm fine in the same conditions in a good fitting 7mm wetsuit and hooded vest).
