Thanks for the intel!
for thePORT is OPEN, still pretty rough but the fleet headed out of the Marina about 8:30 and I fly out this afternoon.
I went shore diving the last several days with a friend who is a DM here on the island. On Sunday we went in north of Coconuts, just below the Alberto's stand, about 20 mintutes out to a shallow reef of primarily soft corals, popped 5 Pez Leon (3 @ 15"+). Per Julio their is normally a north to south current but on that day there was no current and we came out where we went in. Entry / exit in the surf just about kicked my a$$. Yesterday we were going to try and head over to the gallion wreck site but the road got pretty bad about 3 1/2 miles N of Mezcalitos so we headed back about a 1/4 mile and found a semi sheltered site behind on the south side of a point for entry. North it was all iron shore and moderate surf. The plan was to work south about a quarter mile outside of the shallow bay and do a surf exit in some sand but found a strong north current when we cleared the point so we retreated back in close and explored the shallows for about an hour and a quarter and then exited where we came in. Managed to get a few Lions, 2 of which were large guys I clipped and brought out. It was getting late but we figured to head down to Rastas and get a twilight in, with the idea it might be calmer down south. On the way out we found a couple in a rental Jeep stuck in a very large mud puddle (I didn't bring up that it was more than likely a crocodile lounging pool). The Jeep had controls for 4 wheel drive but in reality it was a 1 wheel drive (no positrack) and buried to the axel with water up to the doors. So much for a twilight,a couple hours later and a call to town for a friend to bring a good rope later we got them out.
All in all the shore diving on the east side was interesting but I wouldn't try it without an experienced guide. The entries and exists are scares and there really is no plan B if you get in trouble.
