they put a hold on my order because my billing address for my debit card is in the US and my shipping address now is Guam as I am in the Navy. Tried to explain this over the phone as well as email and these guys don't seem to understand that yes, this does happen because people in the military do have to move from time to time.

Hey, I just thought of something. Why are you shipping to a Guam address?

I assume you've got an FPO address... Isn't that your credit card billing address too? Otherwise how do you get your credit card bills?

Why wouldn't you be using that for your shipping address? They do use USPS to ship to APO/FPO addresses.

Besides, LeisurePro's policy (see their on-line FAQ) is that shipping and billing addresses only have to match for international customers. They specifically say that this policy does not apply to APO/FPO military addresses.

Well hold on there professor. I have some good friends at ScubaPro and know some of the ins and outs of how they get and sell ScubaPro gear. LeisurePro (until recently, when ScubaPro claims to have taken care of this problem) has been getting around of a lot of the dealer probs by getting all of its ScubaPro gear from Europe where free trade is Free Trade. The rumor is that the same is true for Aqua Lung and Canada... If that isn't grey market by your definition, what is?

First of all it's NOT my definition. However you seem to miss the point that it is NOT where the products come from (Camera gear for example mostly comes from Asia) but rather WHERE was it intended to be sold??? Seems to me that with Scuba by in large they have no specific destination. This is VERY different from MANY electronic items where destination determines the model name, model number, serial number, and packaging.

So prefessor, what about my initial description of grey was misleading?

I recently purchased wet suits from LP and was impressed by the service. I called and asked a question about shipping and got good information over the phone. The suit which I had shipped 2 day UPS actually arrived in less than 24 hours and the suit I had shipped UPS 3-5 days showed up in two.

I learned today that LeisurePro is owned by the same folks who own Adorama, a camera store where I happened to buy my underwater video housing, as well as various light kits and other gear over the years. B&H is my favorite camera store but on occassion Adorama has slightly better prices.

For critical gear, I can understand the concerns about "grey market" gear. When buying camera equipment I always check several vendors and avoid anyone with significantly lower costs. Some bargains are way too expensive. This is a general comment. I have no knowldege that LP deals in the grey market. I do not believe Adorama does and if indeed they are owned by the same folks, I doubt LP makes a general practice of it.

The concerns about experience are also valid. At B&H they hire a lot of experienced folks in video, audio, lighting and so forth. Unless you find someone at LP who clearly has experience I wouldn't rely on them for advice. When buying critical gear it may be worth the slight premium to buy from folks you know and respect at an LDS.

One last comment is cultural. The folks who run LP, as well as Adorama and B&H, are not just Orthodox but Hasidic Jews. This isn't at all bad, just different. For folks who aren't used to dealing with them I can imagine how they might seem distant or occassionally even brusk, particularly over the phone. As Dorothy commented, "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore."

oh yes, i've heard several complaints. when you do that much business, you're
bound to have a few disatisfied customers.

what i meant was that i personally didn't have a complaint against them.

Rick, you're from NJ. Have you not heard the expression, "Money talks and nobody walks?"

Business with the Chevra is just that. It's business. Time is money and all that. But most will admit that the prices one can get for photography equipment, SCUBA gear, and, of course, diamonds, cannot be beat.

Hello there. I know that there have been MANY complaints about Leisure Pro. I recently went to their store in Manhattan and to be honest nothing i saw in there was fake. I highly doubt they intended to rip anyone off.

Leisure Pro is the best thing that ever happened to diving. I have spent over a thousand dollars there and have no complaints whatsoever, maybe because I would have spent over 3 thousand elsewhere???

He who blasphemes the LeisurePro is usually owner of a dive shop.

Well, I ordered a roll control system from them last week (thursday) and had to wait today to find out that they put a hold on my order because my billing address for my debit card is in the US and my shipping address now is Guam as I am in the Navy. Well, actually I am originally from the South, but that is beside the point. What I was getting at was a difference in mannerisms. As I mentioned I called LP's customer service with a question and the rep on the phone gave me the info I needed. He was helpful. If I was a Midwesterner calling, the LP rep might have seemed rude. He wasn't.

It works both ways. The first time I stopped into a WalMart, before they spread to the Northeast, I was greated at the door by a Walmart associate who asked "is there anything I could help you with?" I felt like grabbing why wallet and asking "Why?" "What do you want?" I think I actually said, "No, thanks, not yet."
