Whenever I look up, my mask leaks. The mask is a Hollis M1 and I really like it. The strap is not on tight and when it leaks I'm not wearing a hood or anything that can obstruct the sealing surface. It feels like it's leaking from the top when I'm looking up. I've had the mask for 2yrs. Wanted to ask here first before I go out and buy another one. Thanks.

@inquis is spot on. When you look up, the muscles in your face will distort the forehead skin, allowing leakage if the strap is not tight enough. If you put your fingers on your forehead when looking straight ahead, and then look up, especially if you raise your eyes as well, you will feel the skin on your forehead become wrinkled and break the skin-mask seal. My wife and I both have M-1 masks, which we love, but both will leak a bit when looking up if the mask is a little too loose. Easy fix, and eliminates the need for a new mask (or Botox injections).

This makes sense and may be happening at times with myself. OTOH, leakage happens with both my mask and spare mask and has only happened the last 2-3 years.

WOW,...I didn't think to do this because I always hear the strap doesn't need to be tight.
I'll forego the botox and buying a new mask and I'll try it on my next dive.
Thanks y'all!!!

dare i say it....dont look up. lol in all seriousness, i had a neck seal that always let water in when i looked up. i had to be very careful and learned to move my body instead.

but in your case, many times when we look up we wrinkle our forehead by squinting or lifting our eye brows.

i wouldnt toss out a mask i really liked just because of this. it is a minor issue

Pull the strap down further on the back of your head.
I’ve struggled with this (with multiple different masks). Everything I read says that the strap should rest on the crown of your head, however when using a neoprene slap strap or strap cover I see divers with the strap well below the crown of the head.

If I wanted to look up, I'd just roll over onto my back while swimming.
