Christi called me last night around 9 EDT to check in and give me the latest - the good news is that the electric company is getting the power back on and working 24/7 to get it done. Downtown is almost all back on, as is Chedraui and next up is the area behind and around Chedraui (according to Christi, who was standing with Armando near their house when an electric company truck went by, so they flagged him down to get the info). So it looks like Christi will have power at the office and Holly and Armando are due to get power back at their house within the next day or two.
They also said that they hope to get power restored to the entire island within a week to a week and a half, neighborhood by neighborhood. Unfortunately for Christi, her neighborhood is in the area that's slated for last because it was in one of the hardest hit areas for the electric company - I guess it apparently had the most downed wires to my understanding (Christi said there are 4 on her street alone). So she's going without any electricity, running water, shower, fan, AC, computer, microwave...basically any modern conveniences - for a while yet.
She did mention that the new Cozumel Palace does have electricity - apparently they have their own generator. Also Chedraui was running on a generator, so while they had power for the food and cash registers, they didn't have AC running. While the boards on the windows held up, they still lost several of the large plate glass windows anyway, so they still have some repairs to do.
As for the diving, we discussed that the vis would most likely clear out in a couple of days due to the currents. There may well be some shallow reef damage, but that'll be there as much in 2 weeks as it will in 6 months. Hopefully it won't be too much and the deeper reefs will be unaffected. But of course that all remains to be seen as no boats have been allowed out yet.
The rest was just personal yakking
(I did scold her on being completely unprepared for the hurricane, as evidenced by the Oreo crisis
God forbid there's a next time, she will stock in at least a case!)
We talked until we both kept yawning too much to understand each other and I sent her off to bed - hopefully she was too exhausted to let the heat and humidity keep her awake.
So that's my update from last night...hope that helps some of you with questions you may have...
