I didn't want to create a new thread to ask this and this one hopefully isn't too old to resurrect...

Has anyone been to Lake Rawlings recently? I'm doing my checkout dives there next weekend (28th & 29th) and was wondering how frigid I'll be. :)

Thanks!

Well, it's been 11 years since I've been to Lake Rawlings but personally I found this time of the year wonderful. When (hard to say exact date) the thermocline breaks down the lake will "turn over" and you'll have about 62f from top to bottom. For me, this is wonderfully pleasant 3mm wet suit diving.

I don't think you'll find the lake "frigid". Enjoy.

I will be there tomorrow and will give you a temperature update but on 8/24 it was min temperature 78* F down to about 28 feet

Dove yesterday, it was 75 at he surface, high 60s below 22' and 49 at the bottom of the plane.

Bbrlong23, I noticed you are in Fredericksburg...so am I! PM when you want to dive, I am always looking for a partner to dive with... I will be diving this Thursday (Sep 26) at Lake Rawlings yet again

Awesome! I think we're diving with 7mm rentals, so I will be nice and toasty.

Thanks for the updates. Looks like we'll have gorgeous weather this coming weekend for topside activities after diving! :)

For all of you headed out to Rawlings this weekend, dove today..... it was High 70's of the surface, the thermocline was at about 38' where it went into the 60's and at 60' near the Miss Laurel it was 53. Everywhere else I went it was about 55-57 on the bottom. My 8/7mm was actually too much above the thermocline! The vis was horrible outside the "lagoon" and docks and the inversion seems to have begun...enjoy the weekend!

i looked for it but couldn't find it. it was too dark in the sunken boat to really see anything. but this sounds like the making of a new game of underwater geocache. "find and hide egovenatus' 2lb weight!"

hah, I appreciate it Nova, thanks anyways.... just have to get another!

oh yes, congratulations Button! I noticed you went from " not certified" to having dives.... so congratulations on your certification!

Thanks! :) It looks like there are all sorts of fun things to check out in Lake Rawlings... I'm looking forward to playing around with some of the fun things in the lake. Since we were on a guided dive, we couldn't exactly stop and play on the rocking horses. :) Thankfully our divemaster had bright pink tape on one of her fins... otherwise we would have lost her in the murk!
