I'm looking for information on liveaboards out of Khao Lak to visit Similians and Surins. I've found info on Phuket Divers, Coral Grand, Sea Dragon, and Kon Tiki. Does anyone have any recommendations or first hand experience with any of these? I'm new to Scubaboard, so I hope this hasn't been discussed a lot. I'm planning mytrip for January. Thanks all.

To be honest, skip Khao Lak mate! I live there and have for several years. The place is
done. The business owners are greedy, seedy, and sadly after your $ at whatever cost
to the nature. Three years ago, this place was nice, now its rapidly heading in the development direction of Phuket, Samui, Pattaya, etc...

The Similan Islands are being turned into the Kho Tao of the Andaman Sea. Live-aboards and 2-strokes swarm the Islands, dumping 20-30 divers into the sea at a time. Just forget it, do not start, do not pass go, do not contribute to the destruction of nature...

If u have unfortunately already booked a flight and must travel to Thailand. Of the shops u listed in your message I can recommend Phuket Divers, and Sea Dragon. The others are total cons. They have cheated their way up to the companies they are today by stealing the hard work of honest business, and do not deserve any recognition at all. One is owned by a rich Thai politician, but is fronted by foreign management. Dont be fooled, they are bad people to the core. The other company went so far as to steal the name from the original founding operator forcing them to change to IQ Divers. Just Forget them! Give your business to the hard working operators that deserve your business.

Sorry to be so neg. I have been here too long and am sick of the crap. You are unlikely to be screwed by a Thai, just watch out for the Ferang!

hope this helps!

What I don't understand jvalve - is if you are "sick of the c**p" Why don't you simply leave? Also your warning to tourists (apart from eveything else wrong in Thailand) to be wary of the foreigners working here in Thailand - what brought you to this conclusion?
Apologies as a foreigner working in Thailand for over 10 years, I am truly intrigued.

I think this needs a reply.

Jvalve, I suggest that if you live there, you leave right now. You obviously hate the place and have had some bad dealings with people there and hate the diving also.

Your nasty comments about Coral Grand I will pass on to their management. We are an agent for their liveaboard Queen Scuba and send a lot of customers who are all happy. The people who we deal with there are always helpful and friendly. Did they refuse you a job, or what?

In answer to the original query, of the companies mentioned I would go for Coral Grand and the Queen Scuba, unless you want a lower budget boat.

Khao Lak is developing fast, a few years ago was more laid back with lots of cheap backpacker bungalows, now being replaced by resorts as has happened elsewhere in Thailand. But in the high season the beaches are beautiful and the diving is great.

As for the Similan Islands, the Dive Operators Club of Thailand and the Thai government and National Park service are very well aware that visitor numbers are starting to get too high, especially day trips out of Khao Lak. A study was done last season and we all hope that some controls will be put in place before it gets too crowded. I think the liveaboard market is now peaked. Some boats now struggle to fill up, and in my opinion there are too many cheap boats, most of which run from Khao Lak. Some of the older ones really should be sunk. In the next few years, the cheap boats may start to struggle, as Khao Lak develops further and the backpackers stay away. Just my opinion.

In the 5 years since I arrived in Phuket, there have been many new liveaboards of a good standard and I believe this trend will continue. There will always be some lower price options, but I see more high quality boats each year.

Wishing you happy diving in Thailand

Wife and I had a great trip aboard the "Andaman Sea", 4 day trip with Sea Dragon last January. Good food, good diving, good boat. The only bad part was the smokers. If you're a smoker then no problem but we weren't and we just couldn't get away from it. Next time we'll be looking for a non smoking trip if there is such a thing. Other than that though it was a great trip and we'd do it again.

Hello everyone,
Why Mr J Valve do you continue to stay in an area that you quite clearly have grown tired of ? I think you need a break. Tell you what why don't you come in and see me & I'll show you a lovely liveaboard with a good reputation and an extremely hard working staff that actually really enjoy staying here & working here. We can go out on the Queen Scuba, the liveaboard operated by Coral Grand Divers for 4 days & nights and when you come back you may even like what you did. Wouldn't that be a new feeling for you. Enjoying something you do, instead of *****ing about it!
And Wetsuit- a proper answer to your question.
The Similans & Surin Islands are the best places in Thailand for diving and certainly for Liveaboard cruises. I recommend at least a 4 night cruise which would allow enough time to experience & enjoy the best divesites in the area.
Of the diveshops you named here is an honest answer-
Sea dragon- the longest established diveshop in Khao Lak. They call themselves the Liveaboard specialists & with 11 years behind them you can't really argue that. They also have 4 boats from which to choose. They have agreat reputation for their staff- staff who are friendly , experienced and enjoy their jobs.
Phuket Divers- Also a long established business here in Khao Lak. Again they also have a good reputation, helpful staff and price themselves in the backpacker category.
Kontiki- very scandanavian, and specialists in snorkelling and daytrips to the Similans. They don't have their own Liveaboard in Khao Lak.
And finally Coral Grand Divers- well- simply lovely people, fantastic boat, great reputation and possibly "the Baddest to the core manager" in Thailand!( Yup that's me folks!). A little more expensive than most liveaboard operations in Khao Lak, but it has a nicer boat , a lot nicer cabins all with ensuite, and one of the biggest dive decks on any liveaboard in Thailand.
So, Wetsuit, Your question has caused quite a stir. I hope though that you will see through the negativity of some and realise that these wouldn't want to be the sort of people you want to be surrounded by for 4 days !
And J Valve... go home!

I agree that the Similans, Richeliue etc are a bit over crowded now and hope there will be some solutions to the problem. I also agree that there are so many new good quality boats now and I hope that these boats will slowly replace some of the cattle boats and old converted fishing boats. Quality of dive operators seem to improve for most parts as well.

I wish they will sink some of those older boats so the Similans might have some decent wreck dive in the future :D

Have not been to Koh Lak myself as I usually get on a live-aboard in Phuket or Tab Lamu but always wanted to go to Koh Lak but work kept getting in the way!
Oh well, one of these days!

By the way, a couple of friends just came back from Koh Lak, they dove with See Bees and liked the operator very much as well.

Hi wetsuit,
I went out to the Similans on the queen scuba in Jan04 and it was excellent - I can't recommend it highly enough, it was great fun. Its a beautiful boat, lots of space and good equipment. The staff are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and happy, the food is great, cabins comfortable and the diving is beautiful. Perhaps it is a little more expensive than some of the other boats but I thought it was well worth it. It was my first liveaboard, and first real diving experience (I finished my ow and did my advanced while I was on the boat) Now I am totally hooked as a direct result of that brilliant 4 days I had there. I'm going back in the new year, my husband and I got married JUST so we could have a good excuse to go back for our honeymoon (yes, it really was that good!!) Enjoy your trip whoever you decide to go with, but definitely go! Happy diving!

try siam adventure divers they have a very good liverboard we went on a trip and the service was fantastic.
