Man shot dead while beating dog with gun
Shar-Pei survives attack; gun found broken at scene

WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) - A man trying to beat his dog to death with a gun was fatally wounded when it apparently went off accidentally, police said.

Raymond Poore Jr., 43, called his wife at work Thursday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill the animal, police Capt. David Sobonya said.

The wife came home about 6 p.m. and found her husband unconscious, with a number of dog bites and scratches. Emergency medical personnel discovered that Poole had been shot. He was pronounced dead at Winchester Medical Center.

Sobonya said Poore must have beaten the 30-pound Shar-Pei with the gun that went off. He said the stock of the weapon, a combination rifle and shotgun, was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it.

The dog was in the custody of an animal control officer. Sobonya had no detail on how badly it was injured.

It's a shame something similar didn't happen to a certain police officer who recently shot a family dog after pulling the family over and ordering them out of the car, leaving the car door open for the dog to escape. The reason they were pulled over was that the husband/father had left his wallet on the roof of the car at a gas station, and someone rang 911 to report money flying off the roof of a car driving down the highway. The police suspected a carjacking, and pulled the family over and ordered them out of the car at gunpoint. The dog jumped out of the car after them, and the officer shot it in front of the family with a shotgun while the family pleaded to the officer to let them shut the car door to prevent their dog from escaping. Happened only 2 weeks ago and still sickens me when I think of it.

specially since Shar-Pei's already look like they've been beaten with an ugly stick.

If I recall, they're fairly small dogs, so it shouldn't take too much to establish oneself as the "alpha" in the house without resorting to using weapons!

Ben, I too saw the footage on TV a couple of weeks ago. The dog was a golden retriever (one of the friendliest, most passive breeds of dog) and was wagging its tail at the cop when it was shot in the head. It was one of the saddest, most cruel things I have ever seen. I really feel for that poor family, and hope that they somehow are able to obtain some sort of justice for the murder of their family member.

Okay, I was happy on the first post - Pooch's Revenge, but as the owner of two Goldens, who literally are our children, this sickens me.....The family will be reminded of that every time they see a dog, and I'm sure NOTHING will happen to the police officer. I hope that Golden attacks him every night in his dreams......

Nobody deserves to die for beating a dog. I think it is rather insensitive to imply that this was justice. It just goes to show how desensitized our society has become on the value of HUMAN life.

I'm not defending this individual's actions has it is rather disturbing, but to say he deserved to die is rather cruel and thoughtless.

Okay, so maybe he deserved to be beaten just like the dog??? I think it is insensitive to the canine population not to hold the individual accountable, but since he basically shot himself, we couldn't do that now could we???

I read this and I don't know if you're trolling or not. That's the danger of publicly acknowledging what you are. :D

Anyway perhaps you're right. A more apt thread title should have referred to Darwinism and the culling of the gene pool. Using a loaded gun as a club and holding it pointed at yourself doesn't exactly strike me as the smartest thing to do. I guess it's called natural selection for a reason. :bonk:

Chances are he would have been clubbing baby seals or shaking little kids au-pair style next anyway...sounds like a real peach of a human being. My eyes are dry..
