The most useful piece of advice I got when I was looking "It is life support equipment".
That summed it up for me. I just rented and borrowed from friends/buddies until I bought. The dive shop I trained in let me try many different types of everything. Regs,bc's.fins,boots. As a matter of fact, I just traded even, a BC with 30 dives on it for a size smaller. Just my 2 cents. LIFE SUPPORT.

I think that is why I am trying to be so careful when considering purchasing used gear. Because it is Life Support and there is no way around that. So Yes and thank you. I agree with you.

Where is Vortex Springs and what kind of diving is it? Uggghhhh, I can't wait to go.:hyper:

I am so ready. Haven't been in the water since Thanksgiving.

Debi,

I know that you didn't ask for my opinion, heck who in this thread has let that fact bother them. If I were going to drive from West Alabama to Vortex, I'd plan on driving about 10 miles further and dive Morrison. First, I think it is a much prettier dive. Second, it is way cheaper, like free. MHO, Vortex is overpriced.

Howard

ps Yes I have been to Vortex Springs and dove.

And overrated. I have been diving at both Vortex and Morrisons. I like Morrisons better.

Uh ohhh, another question coming on....did you guys really feed any of the fish Saturday with Cheese whiz? Gotta know.....:profile:

Actually feeding the fishin the wintertime isn't always the best. Fish's metabolism slow down in the winter time and they don't process food well. Anything you feed them could actually 'rot' in their stomach before it's digested.

Check out http://www.vortexspring.com/

It's a freshwater spring and very small basin that has been turned into a 'dive resort'. I use the term resort with sarcasm as it's very redneck in its resort 'amenities'.

It's used a lot for openwater training, especially in the colder months because the water always is 68f coming out of the spring, which is warmer than the gulf. The reason why is because they've got training platforms, a store, accomadations (bunkhouses and a few rooms), campground, air fills, etc.

It's worth going to once, but they've recently raised admission prices to $32 which is kinda a joke considering it's small enough to throw a rock across the basin and hit the other side.

Like the others said, Morrison is free and 10 minutes away. Just doesn't have the 'amenities' that Vortex has.

Since when do you guys need "amenities" like a toilet? You use your wetsuits for that:D And since when do you need a bed? Uno uses his car for that. And since when do you need a restaurant? Brandy aka wildman, makes his own jerky and brings it on dives.:)

.....
Is a dive buddy "life support"? If so, maybe I should find one. Anyone seen my dive buddy?

Peeing on a tree at Morrison is a no-no. A while back a SB'er got busted by the sherrif for it.

They do have bathrooms there. I would hestitate to say that they don't have 'daily maid service' though and bring your own TP.

And since when do you need a restaurant?

Sally's is just down the road. Doesn't get any better than that.

Here I am. So RM, How was dinner with the wife Sat? I bet she got better food then burgers and dogs.

They have bathrooms at Sally's too. No need to bring your own tp.

Obviously, a dive buddy for you is one of those nonessential extras that just get in the way when you're diving (like your snorkel) and if you lose it while your diving you don't even realize it until you're out of the water and packing your gear and realize that it is missing. :D
