Ohhh boohoo boohoo. So how far are people travelling just to get to ABWA this Saturday. I'm flying in from Phoeninx, AZ

I'm flying back from San Diego, CA tommorrow. If you're flying thru Atlanta on Delta maybe we'll cross paths. Back in Huntsville by 9:30pm (hopefully). So no time to unpack, I'm just going to crash and leave all my gear in it's travel case and head to Bluewater. See you all soon!

I'll allow anyone to buy myself Thai food. :)

Wednesday is the ficticous holiday made up by retailers to devoid money from mens wallets.

speaking of food. I noticed that Domino's has a Heart Shaped Pizza you can buy on Wednesday. $13.99 I think.

Okay guys; found you. Can't hide from me!!! Alright, I have a question about buying used equipment. What kind of questions do I ask and what should I be looking for when purchasing a bc used? New ones are expensive! lol

And advice would be great.

Debi,

There are lots of great deals out there on used gear. However, all of it is not a great deal.

Example. You buy a used regulator that hasn't been used diving for 3 years. You pay lets say $250 for it used and It was $350 new. First thing you want to do before you go diving 100' deep with it is get it serviced. Typical service cost $50 to $60 labor and $50 to $60 parts. So now your "used" cost has gone up to $350 to $370, which is what the new one cost. Get the idea?

Ok.. since you're looking for a BC here. Ask how old it is. How many dives are on it. etc.

Look for corrosion around the metal parts such as the low pressure hose connector.
Look as the BC corregated hose to see it it's dry rotting or cracking. Unzipp the fabric and look at the bladder and see if it's dry rotting or cracking. Check especially where the hose enters the bladder. Check the BC for wear and tear and if any threading is coming undone.

Blow up the BC and let it sit for as long as you can and see that it holds air w/o leaking.

if integrated weight system, make sure any weight pockets that are needed are included. make sure they fit properly and don't come out. (i've seen this before).

Ask if the low pressure hose comes with it. Why? because when you buy a new BC the hose comes with the BC. However, since it's attached to the regulator, it's typically sold with the regulator instead. If you buy a used BC and it doesn't come with the hose and you have to buy one, expect it to cost $25 to $50 at your LDS.

Find out if this gear was used as rental or training gear. This gear is typically the most abused gear out there. It's been in the pool and chlorine way too much and most likely not kept in maintenance as near as often as it should have been.

Find out why they are selling it and what they didn't like about it.

heck.. it's used. So ask them if you can test dive it.

that help any? I hope so.

What kind of used BC are you looking at and for what kind of deal. that might help with folks telling you if it's a good deal or not.

WOW!!!! I have so much learning to do still. lol....Imagine that.:11: It actually is beginning to sound more like it might just benefit me to go ahead and buy my stuff new seeing as to how the bc that I've been looking at are on the other side of the country.

Thanks alot for your insight. It does help because it's all a learning thing and I don't want to take any chances specially when I'm below. No thank you....:no.
