thanks for the response guys. i wear oceanic 3mm boots and use both flutter and frog kicks depending on my mood or the current.seems they hurt more during frogs. maybe I'm doing it wrong?
i also use the old oceanic spring straps which i bought brand new from an LDS.
will take your suggestions on loaning a size L or using additional padding. thanks!
 
A dive aquaintance of mine used a dremal tool to trim back the out rim of the top and sides when they were hurting his feet, not problems now. Cutting drain holes in the bottom might loosen them up a bit too, since I've found a kind of painful vacuum forms otherwise. I would try a different boot or loosen up the straps. The fins don't need to be death gripped onto your feet, just enough to not come flying off your feet.
