What size spring straps are you using? Did you go up a size.

They do not have to be excessively tight, they have a lot of stretch unlike springs and easily adjustable by making them longer or shorter as needed. I use 1/4” marking grade from piranha, not a single failure with this stuff.

It should be snug enough to hold the fin against your heel but not so tight that it hurts. Bungees are much easier to don and doff fins than spring straps and are certainly cheaper and easier to install. There really is no downside to using bungees.
