Josh is a great guy and runs a nice operation. Dry is nice. Did you get cold? My guage said 53 at 87ft.

We'll have to get out together. You coming on Sunday?

Boy, I am going through MAJOR diving withdrawls!!! The beaches here in the OC better open pretty soon. At least I got to dive in a pool last weekend. Better than nothing! LOL I will be going out to Santa Barbara hopefully next weekend.

Question for you bug hunters....are/ can the bugs be affected by all of the bacteria in the water??? Just curious.

yeah, josh has been awesome, im a newbie and hes been totally cool at helping me out and letting me tag along with him haha. and no, i wasnt cold at all oddly. in general i like colder weather (right now is like my ideal, perfectly clear, but a little chilly) so maybe i just handle it well. i didnt notice a thing in terms of temp though. either way. i dont have a choice, a dry suit is A- too expensive and B- i should get better at regular diving first. but yeah, i really wanna get out there sometime with you guys, i cant make tomorrow cuz tonight is my 21st b-day and i have a premonition i wont be in diving shape tomorrow morn. any other sunday though haha.

Myself and Jeff (aka Frenchy2005) jumped on the scooters and swam North toward the first yellow bouy. Got there about an hour later. Asked a kayak fisherman if he had a depth finder, since we were looking for the dropoff. He give me some visuals, that put us about 200ft North/West of the bouy. We dropped down and descended to 115ft. At this point I tried looking for the wall in zero viz. I could barely see my fins. Called the dive and we scootered back to shore at 10ft. I didn't see the ocean floor from the time we left the Cove till we returned. Pretty interesting diving and navigating in these conditions. Well, it was one hell of a workout and I would not recommend the scooters, since my scooter was out of battery power 3/4 of the way back..........oh, and did I mention the viz sucked.

Dive Location: Crescent Beach (South) - Laguna Beach
Time: 9:15 am
Bottom Time: 20 min
Max Depth: 26 ft
Vis: 0 - 6 ft
Surge: 1 foot at best
Wave height: 1ft
Temp at depth: 60F
Surface Temp: 63F
Tide information: unsure
Comments:
Headed out with about 4 divers down to Crescent, walking the beach to the north side formation/reef - near dead mans' and seal rock. The surf was close to nill, surge was absolutely minimal. Kicked out the reef and dropped in about 20 ft of water. Due to the viz I couldn't see the bottom. Felt really weird in the low of viz. We were finishing up our Advanced Cert. Saw 1 adult garabaldi, 1 juvie, a few sea urchins and that was it! Everything was either hiding or just completely invisible in low viz. I didn't notice any brown water - but closer to the shore, there were pieces of bark and wood floating. No trash - just a 1/2 of a plastic easter egg. Had gear troubles and called the dive short. We were going to do Deadman's but opted out based upon the conditons. Saw a pod of dolphins while kicking back in, 1 seal on the rock who was barking ocassionally. I can agree with Shaka -> viz sucked up here in OC too. I'm crossing my fingers for Catalina tomorrow.

Date: Jan 15, 2005
Dive Location: Long Point (Old Marine Land)
Time: 9:20 a.m.
Bottom Time: 57:50
Max Depth: 47 FSW
Vis: 10-15 (15 around the point)
Wave height: maybe 8 inches or less real nice day to dive
Temp at depth: 59 F Suunto degrees (Yeah, right, try reality of about 57 or so)
Surface Temp: 57 F Suunto Degrees
Tide information: Low 7:03 a.m. 1.88 feet High 12:42 p.m. 4.22 feet
Comments: Entered off the rocks at the point. Dive partner was Andy and Jeff as well. Purpose of dive, get wet for the first time this year, and maybe bring home a lobster if the opportunity presented its self, which it did not. Jeff commented “might as well make sure we don’t see any lobsters, I’m bringing my game bag”. Saw a few all small ones. We swam around the point just a bit. Observed the usual suspects with an exit at the pebble beach. The topography did change some since the last time I was here due to the storms. Had a great time.

Date: Jan 15, 2005
Dive Location: Long Point (Old Marine Land)
Time: 11:48 a.m.
Bottom Time: 48:40 (appointment to get to, can’t play all day)
Max Depth: 26 FSW
Vis: 10-15 (15 around the point)
Wave height: maybe 8 inches or less real nice day to dive
Temp at depth: 59 F Suunto degrees (Yeah, right, try reality of about 57 or so)
Surface Temp: 64 F Suunto Degrees
Tide information: Low 7:03 a.m. 1.88 feet High 12:42 p.m. 4.22 feet
Comments: Entered at the pebble beach and swam over to the cove just east of the beach. Dropped down and went 60 degrees toward a white rock at the other side of the cove effectively cutting across the mouth of the cove. Spotted a 2.5 foot swell shark and a 1 foot octopus hiding in some weeds. He realized he had been spotted and swam away leaving a ink blot about 5 feet from us. Not sure why he bolted as we did not touch him or get too close, but I guess he was nervous about being caught in the weeds and not near a hole. This was also a good dive. Saw HBDiveGirl aka Claudett when we exited getting ready to go kayaking. Great day for it. Bottom line, got in two dives and it was the best diving I have done so far this year.

Date: Sunday, 1/16/04
Time: 8:11 AM
Dive Location: Deadman's Reef, Laguna Beach
Buddy: Marshall Krupp
Bottom Time: 56 minutes
Max Depth: 53’
Viz: 8-15
Wave height: 1'-2'
Surge: 0'-2'
Temp at depth: 59°
Surface Temp: 59°

Well, I couldn't take being dry anymore so decided to quit worrying about the bacteria count and go for it. Beautiful sunny day. Viz in the shallows and around the Crescent main reef was pretty bad, but out at Deadman's it was definitely worthwhile - up to 15' on top of the reef. Nothing too exciting to report life-wise, except one bug that was enormous and gave me a hankering for a lobster dinner. Swam about with Robb Phillips & his buddy, and learned an alternate way to navigate out and drop down right on the reef. Ran into Diver Jan & Steve S. as well.

Finally got back in the water today for the first time this year. I hate rain! We went to the drainpipe North of the Dominator wreck to grab a few bugs. I thought I was at San Clemente Island. We had visibility of 25-30 feet and saw around 100 lobsters...all short. Marc got one that was a tweeker. I always throw those back, but since it was the only one caught, Marc kept it.
Our second dive was at the crane off Malaga Cove. There was a huge bait ball moving around near the wreck, so I got under it hoping to see a predator. A five foot Black Sea Bass swam up to me to make sure I had a good dive.
The top five feet of water was a murky green, but opened up nicely below that. 59F with no thermocline.
