There is absolutely nothing wrong with offering up recommendations and in fact should be encouraged but like I said, the perception is that many of those recommendations come from a single DIR POV. Most of us know it is not true but still, it happens.

Huh? What would you prefer someone to say?

"You could get a back inflate BC like the Libra but then you'll find it a little more floppy with only one tank strap and just need more lead to sink everything anyway so you might as well go for a steel plate with 2 straps and a wing."

Of course leaving off all reference to how if they ever decide to try/use/buy doubles they won't have to buy a whole new rig (again)...

We do. Speaking only for myself, it's not the recommendations that offend me, it's how that recommendation is delivered. "If you have to ask, need or want to use product X then your diving skills must suck."

I'm not seeing these types of comments on this board, from "DIR" people or otherwise.

I'm not either.

... and I submit that perception is encouraged by a handful of anti-DIR folks who it seems are not judged as harshly for their behavior as the people they enjoy criticizing.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all be judged by our contributions, rather than by the "perceptions" of someone with an axe to grind ... :shakehead:

As others have already noted, I'm just not seeing that type of response on ScubaBoard ... but to be fair I only regularly visit a handful of forums, so perhaps it's occurring on ones I rarely ever go to ...

do you have some examples you'd like us to take a look at?
A simple search for poodle jacket or ankle weights should provide you with enough data.

ok. when you find some you'd like me to see I'd be glad to take a look.

I can't remember the last time i even saw a thread about ankle weights...

... or you could choose to back up your allegations with an example ... particularly since you feel it's so simple to do so.

Dave ... seriously ... you're senior staff here. People are gonna give what you say some relevence. If you're going to make that sort of accusation, then I think it only fair to back it up.

Oh ... nice selective edit you made when you quoted me, by the way ... the little snide shakey-head thing was a nice touch too ... your bias is showing ...

As an impartial non DIR I'll let you know that lots of non-DIR divers use the term poodle jacket. I dove one for roughly 350 dives (and call it such because it is humorous). I also tell people to stay away from ankle weights unless everything else fails because they are rarely actually needed. Again, I am NON-DIR.......so what does this say?
