Well Bowling is considered one. It's also on ESPN

My favorite line in Kingpin was when the Amish guy said "Wow it's intimidating to be in the presence of all these great athlete's" then it cuts over to a bunch of pork eating, beer sucking, gar smoking walking donuts. If Bowling and Poker are sports, then scuba has a good arguement at being a sport. If bowling and poker are not sports.. well then there is a valid arguement as to why it's not.

Bridge is in the Olympics and poker will follow. There is no scubadiving at the Olympics.

What you are really asking or is a definition of "sport". If you apply a strict dictionary definition then no, scuba is not a sport (well for most people it's not. See below) . But many people use "sport" to include things like duck hunting or fishing. So if sitting on your but in a blind is a "sport" so is diving. The word "sport" almost has two meaning


But then our dive team has real competive events...

1) Race to the surface from 100 feet. Extra ponts if you "catch air" at the surface.

2) trying for a record depth using a single AL80 and air

3) Earn cool club patches for "most number of trips to the chamber this year"

Who says scuba diving can't be competitive?

Just sitting around thinkin' about how we could turn scuba diving into an Olympic sport somehow....here's what I come up with:

10 meter giant stride entry....but inlcuding a few twists and flip, of course.

The "no mask swim...50 meter, 100 meter and 500 meter.

Underwater relay race

Underwater spearing- (shooting a speargun into a target at distance.

The torpedo toss- (using a children's underwater torpedo)

The strength competion- (how many tanks can one person carry across the sand to the boat)

And last but not least...Underwater acrobatics- (demostrating absolute control of buoyancy while performing feats of weightlessness.

Anyone else got any suggestions....like maybe the beer can crush competion or perfect air ring competition...

Doesn't much matter what anybody else thinks, It only matters what you think. I think billards, bowling and cards are games because you could get really good while only feeling the pain of hangover and the pros making a living from competing are not all in decent physical condition (no matter that they are shown on sports tv). I think wakebording, snowboarding and surfing are sports because in order to get really good you will feel considerable pain and all the pros making a living from competing are in excelent physical condition.

I love John Daly, but his golfing ability makes me think golf is just a game. Now let's look at recreational dive pros making a living from diving. There are a few that are in good physical condition, but that is more likely genetics and diet, as regular strenuous excersize does not mesh with 2-4 dives per day 5-7 days per week. Call it what you want but if you think recreational diving is a sport I do not think you have had much of a life. :no

No, SCUBA, self contained underwater breathing apparatus, is exactly what it says--an apparatus. The activity of using a SCUBA to explore the underwater world is a sport as defined by Websters and any of several other sources of both traditional and modern word useage.

A bicycle is a machine, the activity of time trialing, road racing, trials, BMX etc are sports. You guys need to go get a dictionary, you cannot just make up words and definitions to suit your opinions. Definitions of words are not opinions, they are written down in a dictionary.
