.. The activity of using a SCUBA to explore the underwater world is a sport as defined by Websters and any of several other sources of both traditional and modern word useage.:coffee:
.... You guys need to go get a dictionary, you cannot just make up words and definitions to suit your opinions. Definitions of words are not opinions, they are written down in a dictionary.

Hi N,
Being one of "you guys" I need point out that although you have a point .. BUT.. and it's a big but. The OP said this ..
"what are the opinions here? Is SCUBA a sport?"
He wasn't asking us to look up the dictionary for him, he was asking for our opinions.. and being Scubaboard.. there is no paucity of them.
Heck .. there would be hardly any posts if it weren't for opinions.:D

I've met a number of [usually very competative] people who've scoffed over SCUBA diving being called a sport. Personally I think it's easy to shrug off any activity that involves breaking a sweat to get a little ball in a net, but still, what are the opinions here? Is SCUBA a sport? ;)

is golf a sport? :D

And my point is that the definition of a word is not an opinion except in politics (apparently), the rest of us have the dictionary to reference. ;) .

Well, Christmas Season begins now so let me wish "you guys" a happy Christmas Season and a safe Black Friday or Internet Monday or whatever have you :blinking:.

Did you actually look up the word, "sport," in a dictionary? In addition to what I posted as a definition earlier on this thread, here is info from a few other dictionaries:

Clearly, if diving is a diversion, pastime or recreation, it is a sport, according to the dictionaries.
OWNED  ;)

I have some former dive buddies that will make it a competition, anytime, anywhere. Who can go the deepest, stay the longest, take their tank to the lowest pressure.

Notice I said, FORMER.

Ahhhh, Job Security and bottom time. ;)

Olympic Sports do not include bridge, which you most likely already knew.

On the same page you linked, you will see that Climbing, bridge, golf, roller skating and surfing are sports that are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Bridge btw was a demonstration sport in Salt Lake city's last Olympic games.

but you most likely already knew that ;)

American Heritage Dictionary (2000):
1a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. b. A particular form of this activity. 2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively. 3. An active pastime; recreation.

As Nemrod indicates, dictionaries define words. So we are quibbeling over 3. An active pastime; recreation. It still seems to involve personal opinion. For me, on a common shore dive with a single 80cft; the short walk to and from the water with 45 minutes of floating around underwater with thousands of dollars of fragile photographic gear is not what I consider active. If a housed dslr with dual strobes can survive, I do not consider it very active. Some of my un-common solo shore dives are fairly active; scooter dive, 100cft, 30cf pony with Oly 5050/WAL (w/o strobe) or kayak dive with strobed 5050/WAL (knowing the camera equipment might not survive). Even on those dives the act of diving itself is rarely active. A common boat dive (99% of all recreational boat dives) is hardly active even for a couch potatoe.

If you dive well, diving is more like yoga.

Is space walking a sport?
