Take it, more than worth it. The course is not designed to hone your diving skills, that is what specialty courses or for. The most physically challenging course I have taken yet. Can't go wrong by taking it.

It's a challanging course & you certainly learn a lot from it.

I had an excellent instructor, who was very thorough. It was tough (I'm not the strongest person in the world), but it was fun. In fact some of the skills I was most worried about were the most fun. I went through the course with some awesome people.

You'll be a safer diver, and it's an extremely rewarding course when you've finished (& had a nap).

O-ring:
IMHO, it can be a VERY worthwhile class with the right instructor..

Ditto...

I'm starting EFR in Feb, then Rescue Diver in March...I can't wait!! I want to start them now!! I've got all my books and have read them and will read them again and again! But I CAN"T WAIT...did I say that already????

It is great to see a diver all excited about taking classes!! Please let us know how your courses go!!

Back when I took the PADI Rescue course, it was the toughest course I ever took, and loved it. My instructor was meticulous and worked us hard. We had 8 divers in the class including myself, and when we got to the open water phase it was demanding and educational. Despite the constant wondering if someone else is going to end up needing rescuing, as lots of scenarios were run that weekend, half of them were surprise ones that just popped up suddenly, it was by far the most enjoyable course I have taken.

Be prepared to realize just how unprepared you are, and how prepared you become as a diver who can handle situations that suddenly come up, that you would not have been able to handle before the course.

Besides that you don't want to be forced to be a spectator when something bad happens, out here it is required if you want to go wreckdiving in the North Sea.

I do not want to start an agency war here, as I know it's the instructor that matters, but is the general curriculum the same for YMCA SLAM & the rescue courses with other agencies? I assume this is the case, as from what I've heard the YMCA has excellent programs, but I just thought I'd throw out the question...

Jim

And it's not just the rescue program (in any of the agency's courses) that you learn from.... you have to take CPR and First Aid as well. If nothing, I've learned, that in itself is worth it.
