To add to the obvious I think it important to point out several factors that make Cozumel such a safe place for gringos.

1. The people of Cozumel live a much better life than most common people in Mexico, they know it...and they know why, it is the tourists. That makes them happy to see us, serve us, and it is completely against their culture to mess with tourists. I am sure that in most all cases, and parent of a kid that messed with us would be beaten to within an inch of their life.

2. Almost all of the drug related violence occurs at the US border or the Mexican Pacific state of Guerro (Acapulco). On rare occasion it has included the mainland of the Yucatan but not much.

3. It is very difficult to get on or off the island of Cozumel. If you shoot someone you better have a ticket on the very next airplane, or expect to be searched and stopped on the ferry. That would be a very poor place to have a shootout.

4. Like others have said, my wife and young daughters can walk anywhere on the island day or night and not fear for anything but voracious mosquitos.

Will be back on Coz for the 3rd time in the past year. It's safe!!

You may want to carefully consider your dates & try to book for Carnaval (Mardi Gras) -- grand parade is 8 March & the two downtown plazas are party central starting 4 March.

I wouldn't drive since that would include the border cities but you are in Florida. No problemo. Hop on an airplane and enjoy.

My buddies and I are looking to plan a dive trip for Cozumel in Feb/March 2011. With all the gang violence and crime going on in Mexico (though I think that is mostly the mainland), should we reconsider our trip destination?
I was there and Playa Car in august... friend that lives in Playa said her friend (girl) was attacked while walking home from work .. around 10 at night on a main street with lights... she said she doesnt walk at night anymore and never felt threatened before.. it is a shame that crime is everywhere...

fortunately I have not heard of anything in Cozumel and i have been going there since 80's...

but like always.. you must be careful and observant where ever you go..

while there.. do yourself a treat.. go to home cooking at El Moro... just google it.

and dive Dive DIVE...

That time I was abducted by aliens, they told me that they would not make official contact with our planet and share their knowledge of technology because they've been observing us for years and know that humans can't get along with each other, so why would we be able to have peace with them????? . They told me that if the whole planet were like the island of Cozumel, things would be totally different.

Hello Paco,

it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks, why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution or just engage in a conversation with another member in any one of our forums?

There. I posted. Happy?
