Ber Rabbit:
...Evidently he's a firm believer in not calling with results; he prefers the personal touch of an office visit...

Read: He can't charge the insurance company for a phone call. Sorry, but that's just poor care to keep someone waiting that long. He has the results by the next day.

Not necessairly

Many clinicians make it a policy to only give results in person, not so they can charge for an office visit, but because some things you just dont report over the phone. Some take this so far as no results are give over the phone. Imagine you get a phone call from the clinician "you dont have a sinus infection, you have cancer..." It is always the "routine" test that has the most dramatic and often unexpected results.

While I understand the "some things you don't report over the phone" angle I don't see the point in even getting the results if I have to wait 7 weeks. Personally I would rather get a "you have cancer" phone call than sit around wondering for almost 2 months; reality for me is never as bad as what my imagination puts me through.

I did talk to my boss and get permission to try for a little earlier appointment. I left a message on the scheduler's machine, we'll see what she comes up with. I'm to the point where I just want to have them send the test results to my family doc because his availability is more in line with my schedule.

Anyway, I've got a head cold now; it started a couple of hours after I left his office. UGH!

Small update:
The doc office called back and can get me in Aug 17 in the evening (before my vacation--YAY!) to review the test results instead of having me wait until September. Now if this head cold would just go away before the check-out dives this weekend.

Well, that's a little progress, anyway. Hope it's good news!

Update for anyone who's interested;
Well I went for the laryngeal videostroboscopy and she said everything looks normal. There's a tiny bit of redness near my vocal chords in one little spot but she said she really would not be comfortable calling that reflux, it could be from the coughing I was doing or from a tiny amount of reflux that most people have. Her entry on the "Preliminary Diagnosis" line of the form was "Unexplained Sensation"

I had a heck of a head cold (white/clear mucous) all week last week and my husband has it now--ooops! It cleared up in time for my dives over the weekend but when I got up Sun morning I had a heck of a sinus headache and was pretty plugged up. Sudafed got me back in the water to finish the check-outs but by the time I got home I had a sinus headache that the medication had a hard time killing. I'm really interested in what will show up on the cat scan when I go in on the 17th because it was done a few hours before the cold symptoms started.

Physical examination, upper GI, chest x-ray, thyroid ultrasound, laryngeal videostroboscopy and CAT of the sinuses?

Doggies, Ber, for someone who said, "I'm just about on the verge of panic here as I fear doctors more than death," you're getting quite an immersion ; )

Seriously, sounds like you're receiving a first class work up. That findings to date have been negative bodes well for you.

You health care insurer, on the other hand, may go into syncope when it receives the charges under a diagnosis of "Unexplained Sensation."

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Regards,

Doc

Thanks Doc :D You'll notice all of those are non-invasive and I always tell whoever does the test about my fear. Every person I've dealt with has been great and in the long run that's going to help me get more control of my fear. Maybe one day they'll even be able to take blood without me having the nurse so upset she refuses to be a part of the process.

My insurer is a little weird, they challenged an MRI once that revealed a small tear in the cartilage of my knee. They wanted to know if it was a job related injury--nope. I was treated a little over a year ago for tennis elbow which was a job related injury and originally went to workers comp. The doc didn't fill something out on the paperwork correctly (I think he simply failed to state his findings were that it was work related) so workers comp declined and my insurance had to pay the bills--didn't hear a peep from them about that. Needless to say this one should be interesting.

Well, the final results are in and there's nothing wrong with me. Final diagnosis, allergic rhinitis aka stuffy nose/coughing/closing throat sensation due to stimulus from "something".

I spent close to $400 and pushed my doctor tolerance envelope but at least it wasn't something serious. I've never had any allergies but I have a sneaking suspicion there was something in the air conditioner of my new car that was setting me off. I bought the car in November and started using the air conditioner in April. I remember turning it on and soon after feeling like I couldn't breathe, it originally felt like someone was strangling me; that's when the whole being sick saga started. My husband had even suggested there could be something in there but since I had ordered the car and not bought it off the lot I didn't think anything of it. The vehicle was built in Mexico so who knows what could have taken up residence in the air conditioner while it sat waiting to be put in a car.

The symptoms have finally gone away and for that I'm grateful. The CT scan showed a cyst in my left maxillary sinus but that's something that had shown up a few years ago as well. I had a head cold that started a few hours after the CT scan but nothing showed up on the scan to indicate that was imminent. I know it was a cold because I gave it to my husband--oops! :)

Carrot juice Ber....I started drinking it...a glass a day after I had that sinus infection a year and a half ago and haven't had a cold or anything since. I routinely got at least 2 colds a year before that. And even though your car from Mexico may have been bad, the Mexicans grow the best, sweetest carrots I've ever had. Not like the ones in the US or Belize...Mex carrots are as sweet as candy.
call me crazy....
