I've found the instructors are very good sources of answers to the "why" questions.

I think those f%$#@#*&^ing guys are crazy!

And I think the hub bub about arguing what is and isn't dir has run its course, at least for me. I've read up on, and talked about how JJ wanted to get away from the term because it could be used by divergent ideologies and instead focused on an agency specific approach wherein control of standards could be maintained. I agree with that idea. I also have learned that real life application is more flexible than the way it is portrayed on line. I would urge anyone to balance what they read with some real life representation.

I'm also way past DIR solo and all about DIR shallow water diving helmets now. That's where the money is.

Well, you brought up some good points between jokes. And I guess the specifics of who says what about DIR do hurt the "brand" as far as this conversation is concerned. But just talking about GUEs ex-take on DIR for the specifics of gear and DIR's original "simplify everything" ideology.....do you think it's a process or a system? An ideology or a gear configuration?

Today, as far as GUE is concerned, I think it is a system. They may use a process to refine or introduce new concepts (like diving RB's), but it has pretty well been codified. What was good to see in fundies was that the instructors could illustrate what process was used to come to the standards. The why behind the how.

I definately do not think it is a gear configuration. As we have often talked about over the years, the gear is only a part of the overall holistic approach. Way too much emphasis is placed on it when more could be placed on procedures.

If there was an ideology that I took away from fundies it would be that of conservatism. The "idea" of diving conservatively whether through the team approach, standard mixes, standard equipment, gas calculations or min gas procedures all had that common thread running through them.

Way too much emphasis is placed on it when more could be placed on procedures.

From DIR-divers, or from people outside? (I suspect the latter)

From general on line discussions. Could be the dir curious, dir turned off or new/pseudo zealot.

The longhose is a good example. People could argue that in a rec setting the longhose is not needed because you are not swimming single file etc... but I would counter that a good reason for keeping it is the high emphasis placed on training and practicing basic skills. You lose all those opportunities if you use another configuration. You practice basic skills in simple settings so the rec realm would be a good place to have the longhose.
