Ah, there is an easy answer - 'It depends.' :)

It does, actually. What do you mean by 'a career in diving'?

If you mean, becoming a commercial diver - yes, it is too late, you are just too old.

If you mean, becoming a dive professional - divemaster, instructor, etc. - who teaches part time for the enjoyment of it, then no, you are by no means too old. If you are (too old), then more than a few of us - older than you - really screwed up and aren't having as much fun as we think we are.

If you mean, becoming a dive professional - divemaster, instructor, etc. - whose only source of income is through teaching diving, then no, you may not be too old. But, you might also consider just becoming a monk and living the ascetic life. You won't make any less money that way, BUT you won't have to buy all the scuba gear, either - just a simple robe, and sandals.

If you mean, becoming a dive shop owner, age has nothing to do with it. Financial resources, and a willingness to seriously diminish them, are more important.

Agree 100% with Collium7. It is very easy to take the amazing Caribbean dive vacation feeling and try and extrapolate that to opening up a dive shop in an exotic location. The reality unfortunately will be very different. The vast majority all of your days will not be spent drifting effortlessly over reefs but rather arranging dive boat schedules dealing with small-business issues, fighting local regulations, trying to keep your customers happy, your dive masters happy, and above all trying desperately to make a buck in this economy.

Read about David Shaw (except the end part) and you'll realize you're not too old at all. If I recall correctly, he started diving at age 45 and was setting world records at age 50.

If you want to read a book you won't be able to put down, read Diving Into Darkness, which is about his last dive.

"A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams" John Barrymore

You can write silly stuff like that when you fondest memory is your youth on your fathers Long Island estate like Mr Barrymore.
