The best way to make a small fortune in diving is to start with a large one, ;)

If you want to live the life of one of the DMs at a resort then you are likely too old, they ask for photos.

to be a teacher of diving and make $1.00 an hour you are just right.

+1 what they said.

Go dive, dive often, get in lots of variety including shore, boats, fresh water, salt water, night, drift, cold, warm, ..... etc.

I became an instructor on my 43rd birthday and have been working in the dive industry "full-time" since. And have gotten progressively poorer since but I am having a blast. There are others on this board who have become dive pros in their 50s & 60s. If you want it, you can do it.

If the 60s are the new 40s, aren't the 40s the new 20s? Heck, follow your bliss as long as you can live with the economic consequences. Life is meant to be enjoyed (as long as it doesn't involve hurting others).

I'm 53 and am working on my instructors cert. I don't plan on giving up my day job, but I want to teach adaptive diving to wounded vets. I saw the following saying and have adopted it as part of my own philosophy.

One day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do It Now – Paulo Coelho

hell no you are not even close to being too old. if you want to go after being an instructor......do it. even if it is a part time venture you do for fun. i am 45 and i just started down the pro road. not sure if i will ever do the instructor course but i should reach the SSI dive control specialist level this year. and i am only doing it as long as i am getting personal satisfaction from it. if i make a few bucks to offset the training costs etc, all the better.
good luck !!!

Im 38 and just 35 dives old and i love it. Im thinking im too old to start a career in diving..any thoughts?

Hell no.

Like some of the others said, it's a matter of degrees. If you have an established career and you want to quit all that to go all the way down the rabbit's hole then you'll have to accept a severe life style change. Being a dive pro pays relatively poorly in many areas.

However many of us approach it as a "hobby job" and that can be extremely rewarding. I see you're a composer. Perhaps both of these jobs can be combined into your life. Diving can be a powerful source of inspiration.

Nonsense ... a man is not old until his definition of an all-nighter changes to mean being able to sleep through the night without waking up to go to the bathroom ...

Given the relataively short period of time most people are professionals I would not worry about age. Afterall if you start at 40 you will most likely be done by 42. At least that is a typical span.

I learned how to dive at age 49 ... became an instructor at age 52 ... am still an instructor at age 61 ... and am looking forward to perhaps instructing full-time in a few years when I retire from my "other" job.
